Softball splits DH with Cortland, Quinn ’25 has game-winning hit

Beebe ’24 collected sixth win with seven strikeouts in Game 1 for the Continentals

CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Charlie Quinn '25 roped a walk-off single in Game 1 and the Continentals split a non-conference doubleheader with the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons at Hamilton's Loop Road Athletic Complex on Wednesday afternoon.

Season Update
  • Hamilton (11-7 overall) extended its win streak to four with a 3-2 win in the opener.
  • Cortland, which is a member of the State University of New York Athletic Conference, moved to 8-2 overall after an 11-3 victory in the nightcap.
Game 1

How It Happened
  • Trailing 2-1 in the seventh inning, the Continentals put on their rally caps in the final frame. Sofia Santana '26 led off and nailed a pinch-hit single through the right side. Katlynn McGivney '23 followed suit with another single through the right side and Emma Tansky '25 loaded the bases with an infield single. Quinn stepped up to the plate with one out and smacked a single past the diving second baseman to right center that scored Santana and McGivney with the tying and winning runs.
  • Hamilton claimed a 1-0 lead in the first. McGivney led off with a walk, advanced to second on an infield single by Tansky and scored on a Cortland fielding mix-up.
  • The Continentals' Natalie Beebe '24 allowed just two singles in the second, third and fourth innings combined.
  • Cortland knotted the score in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Gina Meyers.
  • The Red Dragons took a 2-1 lead in the next inning on a run-scoring double down the left field line by Kim Westenberg.
Notes
  • Tansky and Beebe recorded two hits apiece. Beebe hit her team-leading fifth double.
  • Alessandra Priante '24 and Alexis Mayer '26 added singles.
  • Beebe improved to 6-3 this spring with a complete-game effort. She allowed two runs on eight hits, walked none and struck out a season-high seven batters.
  • Tori Reich led Cortland with two hits.
  • McKenna Barry doubled for the Red Dragons.
  • Karlee Weeden allowed two earned runs and collected five strikeouts in the circle.

Game 2

How It Happened
  • Cortland jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening frame on two singles, a double and a pair of walks.
  • Hamilton cut its deficit to 4-1 in the second inning. Mikayla Worzel '23 doubled to the left field wall and advanced to third on a passed ball. Jordan Merklin '26 knocked in Worzel on a groundout.
  • The Continentals added a pair in the fourth and pulled within 4-3. Priante led off with a single to right field and Worzel drew a walk. With two outs, Samantha Smith '23 lined an infield single towards shortstop and loaded the bases. Priante scored after McGivney reached first on an error, and Santana plated Worzel with a bases-loaded walk.
  • The Red Dragons added two insurance runs in the sixth and sealed the deal with five more in the seventh.
  • The contest was suspended due to darkness with one out in the bottom of the seventh.
Notes
  • McGivney ended up with two hits and a walk. She leads the Continentals with a .526 batting average.
  • Worzel tallied her first double of the season and scored twice.
  • Brooke Scheibe led Cortland with three doubles and three runs batted in.
  • Lizzy Byers launched a three-run homer in the top of the seventh.
  • Barry recorded her third win on the season with five strikeouts and no earned runs in 6.1 innings.
