Softball cruises past Wesleyan in NESCAC twinbill sweep

Beebe ’24 collected second consecutive shutout in Game 1 for the Continentals

CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Natalie Beebe '24 helped lead the Continentals to a NESCAC doubleheader sweep of the Wesleyan University Cardinals at Hamilton's Loop Road Athletic Complex on Sunday afternoon. 
 
Season Update
  • Hamilton (10-6, 3-1 NESCAC) won its third straight contest. 
  • Wesleyan moved to 8-8 overall and 0-2 in the NESCAC. 
 
Game 1
 
How It Happened
  • Hamilton opened the scoring with two runs in the second inning. Alessandra Priante '24 led off with a single up the middle and Ella Heftved '25 was hit by a pitch. Alison Zorn '26 drove in Priante and Heftved on a double to the fence in right center. 
  • The Continentals added one run in the third on one hit. Charlie Quinn '25 drew a walk and Priante roped a hard-hit single to third base. Emma Tansky '25 pinch ran for Quinn and scored on a sacrifice fly by Zorn. 
  • Hamilton exploded for five runs in the fourth on two hits, four walks and a Wesleyan error. Samantha Smith '23 and Katlynn McGivney '23 led off with back-to-back walks and advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Sofia Santana '26. Beebe smacked a double to left center that scored Smith and McGivney for a 5-0 advantage. Beebe stole third and Quinn followed with a sacrifice fly to left field. Priante kept the offense hot with a single through the left side, Heftved walked and Zorn reached on a fielding error that allowed Priante to score. Heftved scored Hamilton's final run on a passed ball. 
  • The Continentals retired the side in order in the first, second and fifth innings. 
Notes
  • Priante led Hamilton at the plate with three hits and two runs. 
  • McGivney tallied two hits and a walk. 
  • Zorn plated a team-best three runs. 
  • Merklin collected a single, a walk and a stolen base. 
  • Beebe allowed just two hits in five innings and struck out three for her fourth win of the season. She posted her second consecutive shutout and the third of her career with the Continentals. 
  • Molly Lennon and Krissy Gately had Wesleyan's two hits.

How It Happened
  • Hamilton claimed a 2-0 lead in the first inning. McGivney was hit by a pitch, Santana walked and both runners advanced into scoring position on a passed ball. Quinn knocked McGivney and Santana home on a single through the left side. 
  • The Continentals tacked on three more runs in the second on three hits and two errors. Merklin drew a one-out walk and Smith reached on a fielding error. McGivney lined an infield single and Merklin and Smith scored after a Cardinal throwing error. With two outs, Quinn singled to center and plated McGivney. 
  • Wesleyan put one run on the board in the third on a pair of hits. 
  • Hamilton countered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning on three hits. Heftved led off with a double to deep right center and Merklin crushed a triple to the gap in left center that scored Heftved. Smith plated Merklin on a triple to right center, and Smith scored when McGivney reached base on an error by the shortstop for an 8-1 lead.  
  • The Cardinals had their best inning in the sixth with two runs on two hits and two Hamilton errors. 
  • Wesleyan added its final run in the seventh on two hits, but Teagan Graham '25 shut down the Cardinals' rally with a strikeout for the third out of the inning. 
Notes
  • Quinn drove in a season-best three runs on two singles.
  • Beebe, Priante and Heftved recorded two hits each.
  • Merklin and Smith tripled and scored twice. 
  • McGivney plated a pair of runs, scored twice and singled. She has a hit in all 14 games she has appeared in and leads the team with a .519 batting average.
  • Beebe allowed one run on six hits and struck out five in five innings as she won her third consecutive decision. Beebe lowered her earned run average to 3.50.
  • Gately went 3-for-4 with a triple for the Cardinals. 
  • Cat Palmer collected two hits and drove in a run. 
  • Lizzie Marino, Ciara Castillo, Lennon, Isabella Secaira-Cotto and Revi Brown contributed one hit each.

  • The Continentals host SUNY Cortland (7-1 overall) for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, March 29 at 3:30 p.m.
