CLINTON, N.Y. – The Hamilton College Continentals outscored Cazenovia College 28-12 in a non-conference doubleheader sweep at Hamilton's Loop Road Athletic Complex on a sunny and breezy Sunday afternoon.
Season Update
- The Continentals (7-7 overall) have won seven of their last eight games after 12-3 and 16-9 victories against Cazenovia.
- The Wildcats (4-10) have dropped nine straight.
How It Happened (Game 1)
- Cazenovia took a 1-0 lead in its first at-bat on a double and a single.
- Michael Tallarida '26 tied the score for Hamilton with his first collegiate homer, a towering shot over the fence in center field, in the bottom of the second inning.
- The Continentals went ahead to stay in the third when Jay Schlaefer '23 led off with a triple to center and Greg Kopp '25 drove him in on a sacrifice fly.
- Hamilton broke the game wide open in the fourth with seven runs for a 9-1 lead. The big hits included Tallarida's second homer – a two-run blast over the fence in right field, a two-run single through the right side by Kopp, and a run-scoring triple to the gap in left center by Ethan Harrast '23.
- Aided by two walks, the Wildcats scored two runs in the top of the fifth.
- The Continentals rounded out the scoring with three runs in the sixth. Shane Dux '24 and Kenny Rix '25 cracked back-to-back RBI doubles to right center with two outs, and Tallarida drove in the 12th run with a single up the middle.
Notes (Game 1)
- Eight of Hamilton's 16 hits went for extra bases and the Continentals stole 10 bases.
- Tallarida finished with a season-high four runs batted in.
- Schlaefer recorded a career-best three hits.
- Kopp singled twice and drove in three runs.
- Harrast smacked two triples and is tied for second all-time with seven for the Continentals.
- Taylor Kaufman '26 singled and doubled.
- Hamilton used six pitchers including Eddie Taylor '25, who picked up his first career win. Taylor pitched the third and fourth innings, struck out four, didn't allow any runs, gave up a single and hit a batter.
- Anthony Cretella doubled and drew two walks for Cazenovia, and Will Winter drove in two runs.
How It Happened (Game 2)
- The Continentals cruised after scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning, four runs in the third and seven runs in the fourth.
- The Wildcats got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning with two runs, and added one in the sixth and six in the seventh.
- Phil Bernstein '23 and Schlaefer led off the bottom of the first with infield singles and scored on a one-out double to the gap in left center by Jackson Sattinger '24.
- Lucas Herman '26 made it 5-0 in the third with a two-run single to center, and Tallarida drove in another run on a hard-hit ground ball through the left side of the infield that nearly rolled to the fence and turned into a double.
- Hamilton scored seven runs with two outs in the fourth. A two-run single up the middle by Jack Griffin '24 gave the Continentals a 9-0 advantage, and Schlaefer's RBI double to left field put Hamilton up by 12.
- The Continentals scored three unearned runs in the sixth inning.
- Cazenovia plated six runners in its last at-bat on five hits, two walks and a hit batsman.
Notes (Game 2)
- Peter Jones '25 improved to 2-1 this season with four shutout innings. Jones allowed four hits, walked three and struck out six. He has a 0.69 ERA in three appearances covering 13 innings.
- Kopp finished with a season-high three hits including his first career triple.
- Bernstein, Schlaefer, Dux and Tallarida registered two hits each.
- Sattinger, Herman and Griffin drove in two runs each.
- Brendan Mair paced the Wildcats' offense with a double, triple and three runs batted in.
- Michael Richardson II singled, doubled and drove in two runs in the seventh inning.
- Jack Lees had two hits and Jarod Gallegos drew four walks.
