Softball splits NESCAC doubleheader with Bowdoin in home opener

Continentals flex their muscle with 14 hits in Game 2

CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College split a NESCAC doubleheader with the Bowdoin College Polar Bears in the Continentals' home opener at Loop Road Athletic Complex on Friday. 
 
Season Update
The Continentals (8-6, 1-1 NESCAC) were edged 7-5 in Game 1 before they took an 8-0 victory in the nightcap. Hamilton hosts Wesleyan University (8-6 overall) for more NESCAC action on Sunday, March 26 at noon. Bowdoin moved to 8-8 and 1-1.
 
Game 1
 
How It Happened
  • The Continentals jumped out to a 3-0 lead on four hits in the opening frame. Katlynn McGivney '23 and Emma Tansky '25 led off with infield singles and Alison Zorn '26 loaded the bases with a walk. Natalie Beebe '24 drove in McGivney on a single up the middle and Heftved plated two more on a double to the fence in left center. 
  • Bowdoin responded in the top of the second on a two-run homer by Sydney Lang.
  • Hamilton plated one run in the bottom half of the inning. McGivney doubled down the left field line and stole third. Tansky scored McGivney on a groundout to the shortstop. 
  • The Polar Bears took a 5-4 lead with three runs in the third on three hits powered by a two-run homer by Angelina Mayers. 
  • Hamilton knotted the score with one run in the fourth on a trio of hits. Alessandra Priante '24 led off with a double to right center and Sofia Santana '26 laid down a beautiful bunt for a hit that put runners at the corners. McGivney doubled down the left field line and drove in Priante, but the Polar Bears caught Santana at home. 
  • After scoreless fifth and sixth innings, Bowdoin tallied a pair of runs in the seventh on three hits. 
  • Hamilton had runners on the corners with one out but the Polar Bears turned a double play on a ground ball to the shortstop and ended the game.  
Notes
  • McGivney led Hamilton at the plate with four hits, two runs, one run batted in and a stolen base. 
  • Charlie Quinn '25 hit her third double this season. 
  • Five of Hamilton's 10 hits were for extra bases.
  • Hamilton's pitching combined for six strikeouts.
  • Chloe Garcia led Bowdoin with two hits including a double. 
  • Lilly Armstrong added a double for Bowdoin. 
  • Maddie Current earned her fifth win with four strikeouts in seven innings pitched. 
 
Game 2
 
How It Happened
  • McGivney and Tanksy led off with back-to-back singles and Zorn loaded the bases with a shot to left field. Quinn stepped up to the plate and nailed a hard-hit single through the right side that scored two. 
  • The Continentals added three runs in the third inning on three hits. Quinn walked and Heftved knocked a single to right field with one out. Alexis Mayer '26 reached on a fielder's choice and Smith drove in Heftved and Mayers on a single to left. With two outs, Priante roped a triple down the right field line that scored Smith. 
  • Hamilton added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth inning on two hits. Heftved drew a one-out walk and Taylor Santulli '25 smacked a triple that bounced down the right field line and drove in Heftved. Merklin scored Santulli on a two-out single up the middle.
  • The Continentals plated their final run in the sixth on two hits. Quinn singled through the left side and Beebe called game with a deep shot to right center for a double that plated Quinn. The game ended at that point due to the eight-run mercy rule.
Notes
  • McGivney, Heftved, Quinn and Smith tallied two hits each. 
  • McGivney leads the team with a .511 batting average with 24 hits in 47 at-bats and 19 runs scored.
  • Beebe picked up her third win in the circle with Hamilton's first shutout this season and the second of her career. She allowed just two hits and one walk and struck out two. 
  • JK Bradley and Mayers had Bowdoin's two hits.
