Baseball opens 2023 home schedule by splitting Canton doubleheader

Continentals cruised to a 13-3 win against the Roos in the second game

CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College recorded six hits for extra bases in the Continentals' 13-3 win in Game 2 of a non-conference doubleheader against the SUNY Canton Kangaroos at Hamilton's Loop Road Athletic Complex on Friday afternoon. Canton edged the Continentals 4-3 in the opener.

Season Update

  • Hamilton moved to 5-7 overall and has won five of its last six games.
  • The Roos (3-11 overall) ended a five-game losing skid with their victory in the opener.

How It Happened (Game 2)

  • After giving up an unearned run in the top of the first inning, the Continentals took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom half.
  • Jay Schlaefer '23 drew a one-out walk and stole second base. A single to center field by Greg Kopp '25 drove in Schlaefer. Kopp scampered to second on a failed pickoff attempt when the pitcher's throw sailed over the head of the first baseman. Kopp came around on a double down the right field line by Jackson Sattinger '24. Sattinger moved up on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Jack Griffin '24.
  • Hamilton took control with a five-run third inning that made it 8-1. The big hits in the inning were an RBI-triple to deep center field by Sattinger and a run-scoring double by Phil Bernstein '23.
  • A double to left-center field by Michael Tallarida '26 drove in another run in the fifth inning.
  • The Continentals put the game away with four runs – three unearned – in the sixth inning. Tallarida's triple to the gap in right-center scored Ethan Harrast '23 with the 13th and final run.
  • Canton added two runs on four hits in the seventh.

Game 2 Notes

  • Lucas Herman '26 was 3-for-3 for Hamilton, his first multi-hit game with the Continentals.
  • Kopp was 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs batted in.
  • Harrast finished 2-for-2 and drove in two runs.
  • Tallarida doubled, tripled, walked and plated two runs.
  • Sattinger ended up with a double and a triple and two RBI.
  • Jackson Johns '24 smacked his first career triple.
  • Aidan Regan '24 (1-1) picked up his first win at Hamilton. Regan struck out the side in the first and second innings and finished with seven in five innings pitched. He gave up an unearned run on three hits, two walks and two hit batsmen.
  • Kenny Rix '25 tossed a scoreless sixth inning in his first appearance on the mound.
  • Nathan Welch and Alphonse Fuca had two hits apiece for the Roos.

How It Happened (Game 1)

  • Canton tied the score with two runs in the fifth inning and took the lead with two in the seventh. Fuca and Dylan Allen singled in the go-ahead runs in the seventh.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Kopp reached base on an infield fielding error with one out. Sattinger drew a walk and Taylor Kaufman '26 loaded the bases with a single to right field. That prompted a pitching change for the Roos that brought in Kayden Guerin. Shane Dux '24 grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Kopp but forced out the runner going to second base. The next batter ended the game by grounding out to third base.
  • The Continentals scored single runs in the first and second innings on a sacrifice fly by Kopp and a two-out single to left field by Schlaefer that drove in Charlie O'Brien '24.

Game 1 Notes

  • Kaufman paced the Hamilton offense with three singles and Schlaefer added two.
  • Sattinger singled and walked twice. He leads the team with a 1.315 OPS including 12 walks in 12 games.
  • Brendan Kastner '23 started on the mound for the Continentals and pitched four scoreless innings. Kastner allowed one hit, struck out one and walked four.
  • Hamilton left the bases loaded in the second and fifth innings and left a total of 11 runners on for the game.
  • Fuca led Canton with two hits and Ty Reed tripled.
