Men's lacrosse defeats Conn. College in impressive performance

Continentals led the whole way in a 16-10 NESCAC victory

CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Tim Sommer '23 scored a career-high five goals and the Continentals posted a 16-10 NESCAC win against the Connecticut College Camels at Hamilton's Withiam Field on a chilly Saturday afternoon in mid-March.
 
Season Update
  • The Continentals picked up their first conference win in three tries and improved to 3-2 overall.
  • Conn. College dropped to 1-3 overall and is winless in the NESCAC through two games.
 
How It Happened
  • Hamilton scored the first four goals and led for nearly 59 minutes. Sommer, Torben Wunderle '23 and Will Heher '25 scored unassisted goals in the first 2:17 of the opening quarter, and Thomas Healy '26 made it 4-0 with a man-up goal on an assist from Rowan Brumbaugh '23 with 9:19 left.
  • The Camels scored three straight goals in the last 3:16 of the first quarter and pulled within one at 4-3.
  • Long-stick midfielder Cash Wiley '26 scored for the Continentals 2:49 into the second quarter, but Bobby Chang cut Conn. College's deficit to one goal again with 10:47 remaining.
  • Hamilton responded by scoring the next six goals and cruised the rest of the way as the Camels didn't get closer than five goals in the second half.
  • Healy scored three times and Sommer found the back of the net twice during the game-clinching run.
  • Wunderle found Justin Pearl '25 for the goal that gave the Continentals an 11-4 advantage with 11:57 to go in the third quarter.
  • Hamilton outscored Conn. College 10-3 in the second and third quarters. The Continentals led 14-6 after three.
  • Defenseman Peter Canterino '26 gave Hamilton its largest lead of nine at 16-7 on his first collegiate goal with 9:49 left in the fourth quarter.
 
Notes
  • Healy tied season highs with four goals and five points.
  • Pearl finished with two goals and an assist.
  • Brumbaugh and Wunderle ended up with a goal and two assists apiece. Brumbaugh leads the team with 11 assists while Wunderle has a team-best 15 goals and 24 points.
  • Wiley recorded his first two points with the Continentals on a goal and an assist.
  • Christian Byrne '24 registered a point for the fourth straight game.
  • Heher tallied his sixth goal at Hamilton.
  • Alec Zenker '23 won 16 of 27 faceoffs and scooped up a career-high 11 ground balls.
  • Seamus Fagan '23 made nine saves in 53-plus minutes and Jack Fried '25 stopped three shots in relief of Fagan in the fourth quarter.
  • Jayme Wilde '25 led the defense with four caused turnovers while Wiley and Cole Johnson '23 caused three apiece.
  • Wilde and Matt Mirkovic '23 picked up four ground balls apiece.
  • JJ Ford guided the Camels' offense with five points on three goals and two assists.
  • Jared Rainville chipped in two goals and two helpers, and Chang scored three goals.
  • Jason Fastiggi and Jack Venturelli had five ground balls apiece.
  • Will Rice turned away 13 shots in 55-plus minutes.
  • The Continentals defeated Conn. College for the first time since the 2013 regular season.
  • Hamilton is scoring more than 15 goals per game so far in 2023.
 
Next Game
The Continentals play at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (5-1 overall) in non-conference action on Wednesday, March 22 at 6 p.m.
