Softball picks up two wins in Florida as Heftved ’25, Quinn ’25 homer

Continentals scored 20 runs on 23 hits in wins over Smith and Benedictine

JAN PHYL VILLAGE, Fla. – Hamilton College won both its non-conference games on Thursday at Auburndale Softball Complex. The Continentals defeated the Smith College Pioneers 10-6 in the first game, and racked up 14 hits against Benedictine University in a 10-1 win that was stopped after the top of the fifth inning due to the eight-run mercy rule. 
 
Season Update
  • Hamilton (3-3) will face Rutgers-Camden on Friday, March 17 at 11:30 a.m. and Ramapo College of New Jersey at 2 p.m. at Auburndale Softball Complex.

How It Happened
  • Hamilton took a two-run lead in the top of the second inning. Samantha Smith '23 walked, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Hadley Rogers '26 drew a walk and Alessandra Priante '24 laid down a bunt for a single that plated Smith. Katlynn McGivney '23 hit a two-out infield single that drove Rogers home. 
  • Smith put one run on the board in the bottom half of the inning on one hit and one error.
  • The Pioneers took the lead in the third with a two-run homer. 
  • The Continentals capitalized on four Smith errors for six runs in the fourth on just two hits. Smith led off with another walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Rogers. Priante smacked an infield single to third and McGivney reached on an error in center field that plated Smith. Emma Tansky '25 reached on an error at first base that loaded the bases. Alison Zorn '26 reached on a fielder's choice and a muffed throw at home allowed Priante and McGivney to score. Ella Heftved '25 smacked a three-run homer for an 8-3 cushion. 
  • Smith tacked on one run in the bottom half of the inning on two hits.
  • Hamilton made it 10-4 in the fifth on three hits. Priante singled to right field with one out and Sofia Santana '26 entered as a pinch runner. McGivney followed with a single to left and Tansky bunted for a hit that scored both Santana and McGivney as Tansky was thrown out at second base on the play.
  • The Pioneers plated their last two runs in the sixth.  
Notes
  • Priante recorded a team-best three hits.
  • Heftved hit her first home run of the season and the second of her career. 
  • McGivney finished with two singles and two runs scored.
  • Zorn singled and Charlie Quinn '25 doubled. 
  • Teagan Graham '25 picked up her first win of the season with four strikeouts as she pitched all seven innings.
  • Smith, a member of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) moved to 4-4 overall. 
  • Molly Taketa and Juno Shantz drove in two runs apiece. 
  • Piper Corey led Smith with two hits. 
  • Lucy Helms and Kaitlen Beals combined for seven strikeouts for Smith.  
Benedictine 
 
How It Happened
  • The Continentals made a statement in the first inning with four runs powered by a Quinn three-run homer over the fence in left center. 
  • Hamilton plated two runs in the second, third and fourth innings. 
  • Lauren Olson drove in Benedictine's lone run in the second inning on a sacrifice fly. 
Notes
  • Quinn went 2-for-3 at the plate.  
  • McGivney, Natalie Beebe '24, Alexis Mayer '26, Smith and Priante registered two hits each. 
  • Tansky and Heftved had one single apiece and Heftved drove in two runs.
  • Tansky is 2-1 on the season after she pitched the complete game and limited Benedictine to a run on four singles. 
  • Benedictine, a member of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) moved to 7-3 overall. 
  • Taylor Skraba, Jasmine Lozano, Becky Roncone and Morgan Bruno posted one hit each for the Eagles.
