Softball opens 2023 with losses to Franklin & Marshall, Babson

Tansky '25 had four hits and pitched well against Franklin & Marshall

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Hamilton College Continentals opened the 2023 season with a pair of non-conference losses at DiamondPlex on Sunday, March 12.

Season Update
  • Hamilton was edged by Franklin & Marshall College 3-2 in eight innings and fell to then-nationally ranked No. 20 Babson College 11-3.
  • Franklin & Marshall, which is a member of the Centennial Conference, was also playing its season opener.
  • Babson, which is a member of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference, improved its overall record to 4-5.

How It Happened
  • Tiebreaker rules were in effect in the bottom of the eighth inning for Franklin & Marshall. Sami LaRosa was placed on second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Devon Witt laid down a bunt and tried to score LaRosa from third. Hamilton pitcher Emma Tansky '25 fielded the bunt and tossed the ball to the catcher, but the ball was dropped and LaRosa scored the winning run.
  • The Diplomats also scored single runs in the first and fifth innings.
  • Alexis Mayer '26, playing in her first game for the Continentals, gave Hamilton a 2-1 lead with a two-run homer to left field in the top of the second inning. Natalie Beebe '24 scored on Mayer's slam after she led off the inning with a single to right.
  • Against Babson, the Continentals grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Tansky singled with one out and Alison Zorn '26 reached base on an infield error. Ella Heftved '25 was hit by a pitch that loaded the bases and Beebe drove in Tansky with a two-out single to right field.
  • The Beavers responded with six run in the second inning and two more in the third and cruised the rest of the way.
  • Beebe led off the fourth inning with a double and later scored on a fielder's choice.
  • Beebe scored another run in the sixth after she led off by getting hit by a pitch and then stole second. Alessandra Priante '24 singled and moved Beebe to third, and Katlynn McGivney '23 drove in Beebe with a single.

  • Tansky racked up three singles and stole a base and also starred in the circle for the Continentals. She allowed one earned run on four hits in seven-plus innings, walked three and struck out a career-high 12 batters.
  • Ainsley McClure matched Tansky's pitching performance as she gave up one earned run on seven hits, walked three and fanned a dozen in eight innings for the Diplomats.
