Morgan ’25 helps lead men’s basketball to 60-53 win at Utica

Junior guard tops the NESCAC with 18 points per game

UTICA, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Hank Morgan '25 tallied 15 points and the Continentals posted a 60-53 non-conference win against the Utica University Pioneers at Utica's Clark Athletic Center on Thursday, Dec. 7. 
 
Season Update
  • Hamilton (3-5 overall) snapped its losing skid at four games. 
  • Utica (5-2) is 1-0 in the Empire 8 Conference and is receiving votes in the D3hoops.com Top 25 poll.  
How It Happened
  • The Continentals took the lead for good with 12 consecutive points for their first double-digit lead of the night at 52-42 with 6:14 left in the second half. The Pioneers went more than six minutes without scoring a point.
  • After Utica pulled within three points at 52-49, Owen Kane '25 silenced the crowd with a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 1:17 remaining. 
  • Utica hit a pair of free throws, but Kane flexed his muscles after completing a classic three-point play for a 58-51 lead with 49 seconds to go. 
  • Graham Robinson '25 was sent to the line with five ticks left and hit them both for the final margin. 
  • Hamilton jumped out to an 11-2 lead 4:35 into the opening half. 
  • The Pioneers quickly countered with seven straight points and trailed by three at 14-11. 
  • Connor Jenkins '27 hit a 3-ball on a pass from Will Holmes '27 for a six-point lead at 17-11.
  • Morgan buried a 3-pointer from the corner and gave the Continentals a 24-15 lead with 6:30 to go. 
  • Utica went on a 6-0 run for a one-possession game at 26-24 with 2:47 left. 
  • Utica's Damien Call played the ball above the rim and cut the Pioneers' deficit to just one point at 29-28 with 25 seconds remaining. 
  • In the first 10 minutes of the second half there were four ties and four lead changes, and neither team led by more than four points.
  • Hamilton shot 43.1 percent (22-51) from the field, including 9 of 25 from beyond the arc. The Continentals went 7-for-14 at the line. 
  • The Continentals carried a 43-33 advantage on the glass. 
  • Utica shot 31.3 percent (20-64) from the floor and was just 3 of 15 from the 3-point line. The Pioneers went 10-for-11 at the charity stripe. 
Notes
  • Hamilton is tied for fourth in Division III in blocked shots with seven per game. The Continentals swatted 11 more shots on Thursday night.
  • Morgan has scored in double digits in all eight games. He dished out a team-best four assists against Utica. 
  • Teja Singh '25 scored 10 points. 
  • Kane contributed eight points and blocked a career-best four shots. 
  • Reese registered six points and a team-high nine rebounds. 
  • Holmes tied a season best with four blocks. 
  • Justice Brantley led Utica with 13 points. 
  • Thomas Morreale scored 12 points and pulled down a team-best nine rebounds.
  • Dayion Thompson finished with 12 points and three assists for the Pioneers.
Next Game
Hamilton hosts St. John Fisher College (5-3) at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9. The Continentals will celebrate alumni weekend and dedicate the court to legendary Head Coach Tom Murphy immediately following the contest.
