Smith '24 scores OT goal, lifts No. 8 women's hockey to 2-1 win

Continentals are unbeaten in their last five games after edging Nazareth Tuesday night

CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Abby Smith '24 scored 35 seconds into the sudden-victory overtime period and lifted the Continentals to a 2-1 non-conference win against the Nazareth University Golden Flyers inside Hamilton's Russell Sage Rink on Tuesday, Dec. 5.

Season Update

  • The nationally ranked No. 8 Continentals (4-2-1 overall) are unbeaten in their last five games.
  • No. 14 Nazareth (5-2-1) is 5-0-1 in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference.

How It Happened

  • Smith took a pass from Sami Quackenbush '24 near the blue line above the left faceoff circle and proceeded to stick-handle the puck for the next 15 seconds while the teams skated 3-on-3. Smith eventually made her way to the right-side boards and cut across the right faceoff circle into the slot. She took a backhand shot that sailed over the glove of goaltender MaÏka Paquin and into the back of the net.
  • The Golden Flyers grabbed an early 1-0 lead on their first shot on goal. Ella Cedrone tried to make a centering pass from behind the goal line on the left side but the puck banged off the side of the goal. That turned out to be good news for Nazareth as the puck ended up in the left circle where Abby Flanagan skated into a slap shot and hammered a one-timer from near the faceoff dot 4:43 into the first period.
  • Hamilton tied the score with 4:03 left in the first. Lisa Ito-Bagshaw '25 carried the puck into the attacking zone but lost it in the high slot. Ava Romano '27 put a backhand shot from the slot on Paquin and she turned it away, but Claire McGennis '24 was ready at the left post where she took care of the rebound.

Notes

  • Smith has recorded at least a point in four straight games, and is second on the team with four goals and seven points.
  • McGennis, who has already set a personal high for goals in a season, leads the NESCAC with five.
  • Quackenbush leads the conference with eight assists.
  • Romano collected her second collegiate point.
  • Ito-Bagshaw registered her first point this season and won half of her 20 faceoffs.
  • Mac Donovan '26 made 18 saves for the Continentals. Donovan has allowed one goal in two starts.
  • Emily Ferguson '24 blocked three shots and leads Hamilton this season with eight.
  • Paquin stopped 29 shots for the Golden Flyers.
  • The Continentals had the game's lone power play midway through the first period.
  • Hamilton has won the last three meetings with Nazareth, including the first round of the 2023 NCAA Division III championship.

Next Game

The Continentals play their second consecutive game against a ranked opponent on Saturday, Dec. 9 when they host No. 7 Utica University (9-0-2) at 3 p.m.
