CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's
Claire McGennis '24 scored a power-play goal and
Teagan Brown '27 made 26 saves in the Continentals' 1-0 non-conference win over the Utica University Pioneers inside Hamilton's Russell Sage Rink on Saturday, Dec. 9.
Season Update
- The eighth-ranked Continentals (5-2-1 overall) are unbeaten in their last six games.
- Nationally ranked No. 7 Utica (9-1-2), which is 6-0-2 in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference, suffered its first loss this season.
How It Happened
- Hamilton registered the game's lone goal just before its power play ended at 4:34 of the second period. One of the Pioneers was sent to the penalty box for roughing and the Continentals put the pressure on with six shots including four on goal. Utica also had a great short-handed chance but Brown made a fantastic kick save on a Hailey Modlin shot from the low slot after Modlin forced a turnover in Hamilton's defensive zone.
- A shot from above the right faceoff circle by defender Cuora Sullivan '26 was blocked by Modlin and recovered by McGennis at the point. She skated with the puck into the top of the left faceoff circle and scored on a low wrist shot that snuck underneath the goaltender with just two seconds left on the power-play opportunity.
- The teams combined to put 30 shots on goal during an entertaining second period. The Continentals had to kill three power-play chances for the Pioneers the rest of the period after the goal, and a fourth that started late in the second and extended into the third.
- Hamilton's defense clamped down on Utica in the third period as the Pioneers had just one shot attempt and none on goal in the last 12 minutes.
- Utica desperately tried to pull its goaltender for an extra skater during the final two minutes but the Continentals kept the puck in the Pioneers' defensive zone for most of that time. Utica finally put the sixth skater on the ice with about 20 seconds remaining.
