Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey | | Jim Taylor

No. 7 women's hockey keeps rolling along with 2-0 win over Canton

McGennis '24 and Allen '26 scored goals for the Continentals

CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College scored two goals in the third period and Teagan Brown '27 made 21 saves in the Continentals' 2-0 non-conference win against the SUNY Canton Kangaroos inside Hamilton's Russell Sage Rink on Tuesday, Jan. 2.

Season Update

  • The seventh-ranked Continentals (6-2-1 overall) are unbeaten in their last seven games. Hamilton hasn't allowed a goal in more than 175 minutes.
  • Canton (9-5-0) is 3-4 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference. The Roos were shut out for the second time this season.

How It Happened

  • The Continentals finally broke the ice midway through the third period. After goaltender Molly Lenihan turned away a long shot by Hamilton's Sophie Berghammer '26, a Canton defender failed to clear the puck out of the Roos' zone. Emily Ferguson '24 intercepted the puck near the blue line and skated towards the net. Ferguson's hard shot from the left side of the right faceoff circle was kicked away by Lenihan, but Katie Allen '26 batted in the rebound from near the right post at 9:54.
  • Claire McGennis '24 made it 2-0 with 4:56 left. Canton's pass from its defensive zone was picked off by McGennis in the neutral zone. She maneuvered through the right faceoff circle, evaded a defender and put a low shot into the left side of the net from point-blank range.
  • The Roos attempted just two shots in the final five minutes. One was blocked by Ava Romano '27 and the other was off target.

Notes

  • Brown recorded her second straight shutout in her seventh start. She lowered her goals against average to 1.13 and raised her save percentage to .945.
  • McGennis is tied for the NESCAC lead with seven goals. She has scored a goal in three straight games.
  • Allen posted her first goal this season and her third in 24 career games.
  • Ferguson has three assists this season and 10 in the defender's career with the Continentals.
  • Lenihan made 34 saves.
  • Canton had the game's lone power play. Hamilton has allowed just two power-play goals in nine games.
  • This is the first time the two teams have played each other since Dec. 6, 2014.

Next Game

The Continentals go on the road for the first time this season on Friday, Jan. 5 when they play at No. 11 Colby College (7-1, 1-1 NESCAC) for a NESCAC game at 7 p.m.
