CANTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's
Jack Grant '24 made 37 saves and the Continentals shut out the Trine University Thunder 4-0 in the championship game of the 2023 SUNY Canton North Country Tournament inside CARC-Roos House on Sunday, Nov. 26.
Season Update
- Hamilton (4-0 overall) has opened with four straight wins for the first time since the Continentals also started the 2001-02 season 4-0.
- Nationally ranked No. 14 Trine (8-2) is 3-1 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association.
How It Happened
- Hamilton scored its first goal 9:40 into the first period. Max Bulawka '26, who was at the end boards to the right of the net, sent a centering pass to Noah Leibl '27 in the low slot. Leibl put the puck in the back of the net with a backhand shot.
- Jackson Krock '26 made it 2-0 with 7:41 left in the second period. The Continentals' first power play was about to end when James Philpott '25 took a wrist shot from the blue line above the right faceoff circle. Krock tipped the puck past the goaltender from the edge of the crease with four seconds remaining on the man advantage.
- The score remained 2-0 until late in the third period. The Thunder pulled their goaltender with 2:45 to go for a sixth skater and Hamilton made them pay eight seconds later when Ryan Brown '25 scored into the empty net on a shot from near center ice.
- Luke Tchor '27 added another empty-net goal with 2:02 left on a shot from the left-side boards just over the red line.
Notes
- Grant, who posted his second career shutout with the Continentals, was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
- Philpott made the all-tournament team as he registered his third assist and fifth point and led a defense that allowed one goal in the two games.
- Krock scored a goal in both games and also made the all-tournament team.
- Tchor recorded a goal and an assist. He leads the team with three goals and is tied for the team lead with five points.
- Leibl tallied his first collegiate goal.
- Brown notched his second career goal at Hamilton.
- Bulawka collected his first multi-assist game.
- Ben Zimmerman '26 was credited with an assist and won 16 of 26 faceoffs. He has picked up at least one point in all four games.
- Jeremy Smith '24 had five of the Continentals' seven blocked shots.
- Kyle Kozma stopped 14 shots for Trine.
- Hamilton killed all five of the Thunder's power-play chances.
Next Game
The Continentals travel to Trinity College (4-1, 2-0) for a NESCAC game on Friday, Dec. 1. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
