Harris '26 powers women's basketball to fifth straight win

First-year recorded her second consecutive double-double with 26 points and 15 boards

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Kendall Harris '27 poured in 26 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in the Continentals' 61-49 non-conference win against the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons at Cortland's Corey Gymnasium on Tuesday, Nov. 21.

Season Update

  • Hamilton is 5-0 for the first time since the 2018-19 team won their first seven games.
  • The Red Dragons (1-2 overall), who are members of the State University of New York Athletic Conference, concluded their season-opening three-game homestand.

How It Happened

  • Cortland scored the first five points of the third quarter and took its only lead of the night at 34-32 with 7:04 left.
  • The Continentals countered with a 10-1 run over the next 2:20 that put them back in front for good. Harris found Courtney Shay '24 in the left corner by the Hamilton bench and Shay swished a 3-pointer. After a traveling call on the Red Dragons, Harris nailed a trifecta from the top of the key.
  • Cortland made a free throw before Althea Hill '26 worked the ball down to Taylor Lambo '26 on the low block. Lambo turned towards the baseline and went off the glass for a layup. Harris' two free throws made it 42-35 with 4:44 remaining.
  • The Red Dragons scored the next five points and pulled within one possession for the last time. The Continentals responded with a 7-0 spurt on a 3-pointer from the left corner by Maria Mercado Rengel '24, a turnaround jumper from the left block by Harris, and a Lambo putback off her own miss. At that point Hamilton led 49-40 with 2:34 to go.
  • The Continentals were clinging to a 49-45 advantage after three quarters, but Cortland shot just 2 of 18 from the field during the final 10 minutes, and Hamilton slowly pulled away. A free throw by Lambo with 47.1 seconds left gave the Continentals a double-digit lead for the first time at 59-49.
  • Hamilton opened the game with five straight points and its lead moved between two and seven points before the Continentals went into the second quarter with a 17-16 edge.
  • A free throw by Abbey Schwoebel '27 gave Hamilton its largest lead of the first half of nine points at 27-18 with 3:37 remaining. The Red Dragons eventually recovered and went into the break trailing 32-29.

Notes

  • Harris registered her second consecutive double-double and added four assists and three blocked shots. Harris leads the Continentals with 16.4 points and 9.2 rebounds per game.
  • Lambo chipped in nine points and eight boards.
  • Hill contributed eight points and two steals.
  • Hamilton shot 47.6 percent (10 of 21) from beyond the arc.
