No. 5 women's hockey edged in overtime by Amherst, 2-1

The two top-five teams play again at Russell Sage Rink on Sunday, Nov. 19

CLINTON, N.Y. – Amherst College's Alyssa Xu scored 1:51 into the sudden-victory overtime period and lifted the Mammoths to a 2-1 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals inside Hamilton's Russell Sage Rink on Saturday, Nov. 18.
 

Season Update

The nationally ranked No. 5 Continentals and No. 2 Amherst were playing their first games of the season.
 

How It Happened

  • Xu's game-winner was the third shot attempt of the extra period between the two teams. The previous two were stopped by the goaltenders. Maeve Reynolds and Emily Hohmann picked up the assists.
  • After a scoreless first period, Mary Thompson gave the Mammoths a 1-0 lead 2:55 into the second with a power-play goal. Thompson had just put a shot on goal that Hamilton goaltender Teagan Brown '27 stopped a few seconds before. Rylee Glennon and Alejandra Ubarri had the assists.
  • Claire McGennis '24 tied the score 49 seconds into the third period while the Continentals had a two-skater advantage. Hamilton was on the power play for the last 1:04 of the second period and Amherst was whistled for another penalty 31 seconds into the third. McGennis found the back of the net with just seven seconds left on the 5-on-3. Abby Smith '24 and Sami Quackenbush '24 picked up the assists.
 

Notes

  • There were just 38 shots on goal in this hard-fought defensive battle between two top-five teams.
  • The Continentals were 1-for-3 on the power play while the Mammoths were 1-for-4.
  • Amherst won 38 of 58 faceoffs.
  • Brown made 19 saves in her collegiate debut.
  • McGennis recorded her eighth goal and 27th point at Hamilton.
  • Smith has 31 career points and the defender Quackenbush has 18.
  • Emily Ferguson '24 led the Continentals defense with three blocked shots.
  • Natalie Stott turned away 16 shots for the Mammoths.

The two teams are back at it inside Hamilton's Russell Sage Rink on Sunday, Nov. 19. The puck drops at 3 p.m.
