Volleyball outlasted by Trinity in five-set NESCAC battle

Continentals host nationally ranked No. 15 Wesleyan on Saturday in regular season finale


CLINTON, N.Y. – Trinity College's Ellie Gordon tallied a match-high 15 kills and the Bantams defeated the Hamilton College Continentals in five sets (16-25, 26-24, 25-16, 18-25, 15-6) inside Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Friday, Oct. 27. 
 
Season Update
  • Hamilton (10-8 overall) is tied for sixth place in the NESCAC standings with a 4-5 conference record. 
  • Trinity (15-6) is in a three-way tie for second place in the standings at 6-3. 
How It Happened
  • In the fifth set Trinity gave up the first point but scored the next four and cruised the rest of the way. The Bantams led by as many as nine points and eventually sealed the match on a kill by Lola Craig. 
  • Trailing 12-9 in the first set, Hamilton claimed the next five points for a 14-12 advantage. The Bantams fought back and evened the score at 16-16, but the Continentals ran off the next nine points and took the set.   
  • The second set was tied at 13-13 when the Bantams countered with the next five points for an 18-13 cushion. Hamilton slowly chipped away at its deficit and finally moved in front for the first time in the set at 24-23 on an ace by Kendall Scholz '27. Facing set point and a big deficit, Trinity responded with kills by three different players and tied the match at a set apiece. 
  • The Bantams recorded the first three points in the third set, rolled out to a 6-2 advantage and stayed on top the entire set. Trinity boasted a .457 hitting percentage with 19 kills and just three errors. 
  • After five early ties and three lead changes in the fourth set, Hamilton scored five straight points and grabbed a 16-11 advantage. The run was sparked by a kill by Summer McClintic '24, two blocks apiece by Kate Carman '24 and Drew Stimson '25, and two Trinity attack errors. The Bantams were able to pull within two points at 19-17, but Carman, McClintic and Scholz combined for four straight kills and a 23-17 cushion. Hamilton closed out the set with a kill by Caitlin Allen '27 and another by McClintic, who had six in the set. 
Notes
  • Carman tallied 14 kills and tied a career high with five blocks. 
  • McClintic added 13 kills and 13 digs for her eighth double-double this year.
  • Elodie McGeiver '27 chipped in a season-best 11 kills.  
  • Scholz recorded 10 digs and a team-high three service aces. 
  • Allen registered a team-best seven blocks. It's the fourth time this season she has had at least seven in a match, and is sixth in the NESCAC in blocks per set. 
  • Morelli collected 44 assists and 10 digs. 
  • Rylee Bergeron '26 led the Continentals with 19 digs. 
  • Margaret McCarthy and Bella Caffuzzi had 13 and 12 kills, respectively, for the Bantams.
  • Scarlett Jago led Trinity with 19 digs, Bella Nash served four aces and Ava Boloyan came up with seven blocks. 
Next Match
Hamilton hosts nationally ranked No. 15 Wesleyan University (18-1, 9-0 NESCAC) in the Continentals' final match of the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 1 p.m.
