Basel ’24, Morrow ’24 score in women’s soccer non-conference win

Continentals buried two goals in 40 seconds midway through the second half

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Leah Basel '24 scored a goal and passed out an assist as the Continentals came from behind for a 2-1 non-conference win against Mount Saint Mary College at Mount Saint Mary's Kaplan Field on Sunday afternoon. 
 
Season Update
  • Hamilton (8-4-3 overall) received votes in the United Soccer Coaches Division III Top 25 poll. 
  • Mount Saint Mary, which is a member of the Skyline Conference, moved to 5-9-3 on the season. 
How It Happened
  • Trailing 1-0, the Continentals were making a run up the left side of the field and Kelly Grossman '24 tossed a long throw-in to Taryn Gillis '26 who crossed it to the front of the box and Basel charged in for the header past the hands of Mount Saint Mary's Christina Kakavas with 16:08 remaining in the second half. 
  • Olivia Morrow '24 buried the game-winning goal just 40 seconds later. Basel gathered possession in the right corner and Morrow sprinted past two defenders. She rocketed a shot into the left corner of the net for a 2-1 advantage.  
  • The Knights had a free-kick opportunity in the 17th minute and Mary Langan netted a goal on a pass from Maria Baldwin.  
  • Hamilton outshot Mount Saint Mary 23-2 with a season-high 14 on goal. 
  • The Continentals carried a 9-1 advantage on corner kicks. The nine corners are the most this season.
Notes
  • Hamilton has defeated Mount Saint Mary in three consecutive matches. 
  • Basel registered her second goal in five days – the first two of her career. 
  • Morrow scored her third goal this season and the fifth of her career. 
  • Gillis passed out her first assist this season and the second of her career. 
  • Olivia Connolly '27 made one save in her first collegiate appearance for the Continentals.
  • Kakavas recorded 12 saves, including nine in the first half, for the Knights.
