Volleyball sweeps DeSales in dominating fashion on senior night

Continentals boasted a .379 hitting percentage in non-conference victory

CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Kate Carman '24 smashed a team-high nine kills and the Continentals swept non-conference opponent DeSales University in three sets at Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Friday evening.
 
Season Update
  • The Continentals improved to 9-7 overall and won in three sets for the third time in their last four matches.
  • DeSales, which is a member of the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom, dipped to 8-14 overall.
 
How It Happened
  • Trailing 4-1 in the opening set, the Continentals countered with the next four points for a 5-4 advantage. A kill by the Bulldogs tied the score at 8-8 apiece, Hamilton scored seven of the next eight points for a 15-9 cushion. A kill by Chiara Morley-McLaughlin '24 gave Hamilton a 20-14 lead. After giving up the next point, the Continentals claimed the next four on two kills by Summer McClintic '24, another kill by Morley-McLaughlin and a DeSales attack error. Morley-McLaughlin closed out the first set with her third kill.
  • The Continentals rushed to a 7-1 lead in the second set keyed by a block, kill and service ace by Morley-McLaughlin. Caitlin Allen '27 also contributed two kills. Hamilton fed off the boisterous crowd and led the entire set. The Continentals held a commanding 21-9 advantage and scored the final four points on a kill by Kendall Scholz '27, two service aces by Claire Cooper '26 and another kill by Allen.
  • The final set featured six early ties before Hamilton took off on a 9-1 run and widened the gap to 15-7. DeSales displayed a last-ditch effort with a five-point spark and cut its deficit to two points at 18-16. A service error broke up the Bulldogs' spurt and Cate Iven '25 served an ace for a four-point lead. DeSales responded with the next two points but three kills by McClintic and an ace by Hanna Cillo '24 gave the Continentals a 24-18 advantage.
  • The Continentals recorded an impressive .412 hitting percentage in the final set with 16 kills and just two errors. 
  • Hamilton's .379 hitting percentage (44-5-103) was its best since Sept. 11, 2021.
 
Notes
  • The Continentals honored Cillo, McClintic, Carman, Morley-McLaughlin and Melissa Morelli '24 during a pregame senior recognition ceremony.
  • McClintic tallied eight kills and paced Hamilton with 14 digs. 
  • Morley-McLaughlin recorded a .667 hitting percentage with a season-best eight kills on 12 attempts. 
  • Morelli passed out 28 assists and had a team-best three service aces. She moved into fourth place on the program's all-time list with 1,662 career assists.
  • Rylee Bergeron '26 was credited with 13 digs.
  • Delanie Zohler recorded a team-best nine kills for DeSales.
  • Emma Notarfrancesco led the Bulldogs with 14 digs.
 
Next Match
Hamilton hosts Hartwick College (10-8 overall) in the Continentals' final non-conference match of the season on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 1 p.m.
