Men’s basketball rallies past NESCAC foe Trinity, Rood ’23 scores 21

Continentals shot their way out of a 10-point halftime deficit in an exhilarating showdown

Hamilton College's Conner Rood '23 was a flawless 17-for-17 at the free-throw line and the Continentals outlasted the Trinity College Bantams 80-75 in NESCAC action at Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Friday evening.  
 
How It Happened
  • The Continentals moved in front for good with a 12-2 run that turned a 60-56 deficit into a 68-62 lead with 5:47 left in the second half.
  • The score was tied for a sixth and final time at 62-62 before Rood gave the Continentals the lead for good with another perfect trip at the line with 6:49 to go. 
  • Rood hit a fast-break jumper in the paint and Eric Anderson '23 went 2-for-2 at the stripe for the 68-62 advantage. 
  • Teja Singh '25 and Anderson drained 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions for a 74-66 lead with 4:33 remaining. 
  • Trinity's Ben Callahan-Gold was fouled on a 3-point shot attempt and hit all three free throws as he slashed Hamilton's lead to 74-70 with 3:42 left.
  • The Continentals made six straight free throws and grabbed their largest lead of 10 points at 80-70 with 48 seconds remaining.
  • The Bantams' Henry Vetter hit a pair at the line and added a 3-pointer with only 13 ticks left, but they turned the ball over with less than 10 seconds left and Hamilton dribbled out the remaining time. 
  • Trinity jumped out to an 11-6 lead in the first six minutes. Callahan-Gold hit a shot from beyond the arc for a nine-point advantage at 23-14 with 8:27 left in the first half. 
  • The Bantams led by as many as 12 points twice in the last four minutes, including 35-23 with 2:05 to go. 
  • Rood cut Hamilton's deficit back to 10 points after two shots at the line for a 35-25 score at the break. 
  • Liam Regan '23 hit 3-pointers on consecutive offensive possessions and cut Trinity's lead to three points at 38-35 just two minutes into the second half. 
  • Rood knocked down two shots at the line, Hank Morgan '25 made a layup, Regan swished another 3-ball and the Continentals trailed by two at 44-42 five minutes into the second. 
  • Rood tied the score at 44-44 on two free throws with 14:21 left. 
  • The contest featured seven lead changes. 
  • Trinity shot 40.6 percent (26-64) from the floor, including 8 of 19 from the 3-point line, and just 57.7 percent (15-26) at the charity stripe. 
  • Hamilton shot 48.3 percent (14-29) from the floor, including 8 of 15 from 3-point land, in the second half. The Continentals registered a season-best 93.1 percent (27-29) at the free-throw line for the night. 
  • The Continentals blocked a season-best eight shots.
  • Hamilton owned a 47-36 advantage on the glass.  
Notes
  • Hamilton (13-7, 4-2 NESCAC) won its third consecutive contest.
  • Trinity (14-5, 2-3) dropped its fourth straight game. 
  • Rood recorded his second double-double of the season with 21 points and a career high-tying 12 rebounds. He also added a team-best six assists. 
  • Anderson was one rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards and 15 points off the bench. 
  • Regan shot 3 of 4 from beyond the arc and finished with 11 points and four assists. 
  • Morgan and Singh scored 10 apiece and Singh added three steals. 
  • Owen Kane '25 collected a career-high three blocks. 
  • Callahan-Gold paced Trinity with 34 points. He made 4 of 8 shots from 3-point range and went 8-for-10 at the line. 
  • Vetter scored 15 points in 21 minutes off the bench for the Bantams.
Next Game
  • Hamilton hosts Wesleyan University (13-6, 4-1 NESCAC) on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 3 p.m. Hamilton will honor Anderson, Nkosi Cooper '23, William Gordon '23, Patrick Mogan '23, Regan and Rood during a Senior Day ceremony at the beginning of halftime.
