Women’s basketball cruises past nationally ranked Tufts by 16 points

Lambo ’26 posted a double-double for the Continentals, who had lost 16 straight to the Jumbos

CLINTON, N.Y. -- Hamilton College opened with eight straight points and the Continentals led the whole way in a 59-43 NESCAC win over the Tufts University Jumbos at Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Saturday afternoon. 
 
How It Happened
  • Hamilton outscored Tufts 15-8 in the first quarter as Maria Mercado Rengel '24 scored five of her eight points.
  • Althea Hill '26 started the second quarter with a jumper and the Continentals led by 11 at 24-13 heading into the break. The Jumbos were just 2 of 13 from the field in the second.
  • Hamilton stretched its lead to 13 points on a jumper by Courtney Shay '24 on the first possession of the third quarter. 
  • Rengel drained a 3-ball and Emma Sehring '23 hit a layup for a 35-20 advantage with 5:45 left in the third. 
  • The Jumbos trimmed their deficit back to 11 at 37-26 with 3:32 left thanks to a 3-pointer and an old-fashioned 3-point play. 
  • Sehring closed out the quarter with a pair at the line for a 13-point cushion at 39-26. 
  • Hamilton led by double digits the entire fourth quarter as the Continentals went 14-for-22 at the line in the final 10 minutes.
  • Tufts was held to 25 percent shooting (15-60) from the floor, including 3 of 20 from the 3-point line, and went 10-for-13 at the charity stripe. 
  • Hamilton shot 32.8 percent (19-58) from the floor and 65.5 percent (19-29) at the line.
  • The Continentals scored 30 points in the paint. 
  • Hamilton owned a 52-37 advantage on the glass. 
Notes
  • Hamilton (9-6, 2-2 NESCAC) defeated Tufts for the second time in 18 meetings. The Continentals' only other win against the Jumbos was the first time they played each other during the 1995-96 season. 
  • Tufts (11-5, 2-1) is ranked 25th in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Top 25 poll and received votes in the D3hoops.com Top 25 poll. 
  • Lambo earned her fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 boards. She added three assists and two steals. 
  • Shay tallied 11 points – her first time in double figures in seven games. 
  • Sehring chipped in 11 points and nine boards.
  • Emily Hall '24 collected 10 points. She has reached double figures in six of the last eight.
  • Sarah Crossett paced Tufts with 13 points.
  • Callie O'Brien was 3 of 6 from the floor and tallied nine points. 
  • Maggie Russell grabbed eight rebounds and made four steals.

  • Hamilton will travel to Babson Park, Mass., for a non-conference game at Babson College (12-1 overall) on Monday, Jan. 16 at 6 p.m.
