Women’s basketball downed by nationally ranked No. 8 Smith

Emma Sehring ’23 tallied her fifth double-double of the season with a career-high 19 points and 13 rebounds

CLINTON, N.Y. – Smith College's Morgan Morrison poured in 20 points and grabbed 17 rebounds and the nationally ranked No. 8 Pioneers posted a 68-52 non-conference win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Tuesday evening.
 
How It Happened
  • The Pioneers netted the first five points of the opening quarter before Emma Sehring '23 put Hamilton on the board with a jumper. 
  • Amelia Clairmont hit both of Smith's 3-pointers for an 11-4 lead with four minutes remaining. 
  • The Pioneers pushed their lead to 14-6 before Sehring hit a layup and Olivia Davis '23 made two at the line to close out the first quarter. The Continentals trailed 15-10. 
  • Emily Hall '24 sank two free throws and Sehring converted an old-fashioned 3-point play, and Hamilton only trailed by two at 19-17 with 7:16 left. 
  • Althea Hill '26 evened the score at 26 apiece on a jumper with 2:12 remaining but Smith ended the quarter on a 7-0 run. 
  • Maria Mercado Rengel '24 opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer on a pass from Hall that slashed Smith's lead to four points at 33-29. 
  • Sehring hit a layup and put the Continentals within a single possession with 6:50 to go. 
  • Smith scored nine straight and opened up an 11-point cushion at 44-33 with 1:52 remaining in the third.
  • The Continentals failed to get any closer and the Pioneers held a double-digit lead for the entire fourth quarter. 
  • Hamilton shot 34.4 percent (21-61) from the floor and was 9-for-14 at the stripe. 
  • Smith shot 42.2 percent (27-64), including 2 of 12 from beyond the arc, and was 12-for-16 at the line. 
  • The Pioneers collected 44 points in the paint. 
  • Smith owned a 45-36 advantage on the glass.

  • Hamilton moved to 7-6 overall. 
  • Smith (13-1), which is 1-0 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference, is ranked eighth in the D3hoops.com and Women's Basketball Coaches Association Top 25 polls. 
  • Sehring paced Hamilton with a career-high 19 points after going 8 of 14 from the floor. She added 13 rebounds for her fifth double-double this season. 
  • Mercado Rengel added 11 points and three steals.
  • Hall contributed nine points and a team-best four assists. 
  • Morrison led Smith with five blocks and a pair of steals.
  • Clairmont dropped in 12 points.
  • Jessie Ruffner chipped in 10 points and seven assists.
