Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer surges in second half and defeats No. 9 Middlebury

Ehrenfreund ’25 and Margaronis ’25 net second half goals for the Continentals

Hamilton College's Luke Ehrenfreund '25 and Pandelis Margaronis '25 scored in the second half, and the Continentals stormed back and defeated the Middlebury College Panthers in a NESCAC matchup on Saturday afternoon at Middlebury's South Street Field.

How It Happened
  • Nationally ranked No. 9 Middlebury opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a goal by Casey Lund. The Panthers earned a corner kick and Eujin Chae sent it high to the back post where Lund connected on a header into the left corner.
  • Hamilton finally responded at 61:51 on a free-kick goal by Ehrenfreund after the Panthers were called for a handball just outside the top of the box. Middlebury set up their wall, but Ehrenfreund found a hole and placed his shot perfectly in the upper right-hand corner.
  • Margaronis scored the go-ahead goal in the 76th minute. Hamilton was on the counterattack before Middlebury forced a turnover, but Justin D'Alessandro '23 put the pressure on the Panther defense and took back possession. He passed to Margaronis who sent a spinner to the upper left-hand corner past Middlebury keeper Ryan Grady.
  • Middlebury outshot Hamilton 16-10, but the Continentals held a 7-6 edge in the second half.
  • The Panthers held a 9-4 advantage on corner kicks.
Notes
  • The Continentals improve to 4-0-0 overall (2-0 NESCAC) while Middlebury falls to 2-1-1 (0-1-1).
  • This is Hamilton's best start since 2008 when the Continentals were also 4-0-0.
  • The last time Hamilton defeated Middlebury was Nov. 5, 2016 in the NESCAC championship semifinals.
  • Ehrenfreund netted his first goal this season while Margaronis tallied his third.
  • Middlebury's Lund registered his first career goal.
  • D'Alessandro picked up his first assist of the season.
  • Ben Ziegler '24 picked up his third win in goal with five saves before leaving due to injury with less than 13 minutes remaining.

Next Match
  • Hamilton will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 20 as the Continentals travel to SUNY Polytechnic for a non-conference matchup at 6 p.m.
