Softball scores three in sixth, rallies for win against Amherst

Heftved '25 drives in the go-ahead run with a triple for the Continentals

The Hamilton College Continentals scored three runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth inning and took a 4-2 NESCAC West Division victory against the Amherst College Mammoths at Hamilton's Loop Road Athletic Complex on Friday.

The Continentals (12-3, 1-0 NESCAC West) trailed 2-0 in the third inning in the opener of this three-game series. The teams meet again at Hamilton on Saturday, April 9 for a doubleheader beginning at noon. The Continentals have won six of the last seven meetings with Amherst.

Natalie Beebe '24 picked up her eighth win of the season in the circle, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks while fanning four. Beebe is third in the conference with a 1.67 earned run average, second with 55 strikeouts and second in wins.

Emma Tansky '25 led the Continentals at the plate with two hits and two runs. Katlynn McGivney '23, Alessandra Priante '24, Ella Heftved '25, Beebe, Shelby McVey '22 and Charlie Quinn '25 had the other six hits. Heftved led the team with two runs batted in.

After retiring the side in order in the top half of the sixth, the Continentals put their rally caps on for the bottom frame. Tansky started things off with her second infield single with one out and showed her speed on a steal of second base. Priante followed with a bloop single up the middle, and Heftved roped the ball down the first-base line for a triple that scored Tansky and Priante with the tying and go-ahead runs. McVey knocked in Hamilton's final run on a line-drive single to right field with two outs. The Continentals handed Amherst pitcher Dani Torres Werra her first loss of the season.

Amherst (10-5, 2-2) gathered a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Rachel Lovejoy drew a walk and moved into scoring position on a fielder's choice. Torres Werra knocked a two-out double to left center that plated Lovejoy. In the third Megan Taketa drew a one-out walk and stole second base. Autumn Lee's two-out single up the middle plated Taketa.

Hamilton found the scoreboard in the fourth inning. Tansky's led off with an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error. Heftved moved Tansky to third on a flyout to right field, and Beebe hit for distance up the middle and drove in Tansky with the first run.
