Softball splits doubleheader with Oswego in 2022 home opener

Continentals slugged their way to victory in Game 1

Hamilton College split a non-conference doubleheader with the SUNY Oswego Lakers in the Continentals' home opener at Loop Road Athletic Complex on Tuesday afternoon.

The Continentals (11-3 overall) took a 9-7 victory in Game 1 before they fell 3-1 in the nightcap. Hamilton will open NESCAC West Division play on Friday, April 8 with a single seven-inning contest at home against Amherst College at 5 p.m.

Game 1

Emma Tansky '25 led the Continentals with three hits and four stolen bases and pitched a complete game. Tansky collected her third win in the circle while fanning six.

Natalie Beebe '24 was 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs batted in, and Alessandra Priante '24 tallied two hits and drove in a pair of runs. Charlie Quinn '25 plated three Continentals.

Hamilton jumped out to a four-run lead in the bottom of the first on just two hits. Tanksy led off with a single up the middle and stole second base. Beebe drew a walk and both runners moved up on a double steal. Ella Heftved '25 walked to load the bases, and Priante forced in a run with another walk. Quinn cleared the bases with a two-out double to right-center field.

Oswego got a run back in the second. Zoe Mennig doubled to left center and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Taylor Dubois drove in Mennig on a double to right field. Tansky settled down and retired the next three Lakers in order.

The Continentals plated two runs in the bottom half of the inning on three hits. Tanksy beat the throw from the pitcher for an infield single and advanced to third on a throwing error. Beebe roped a double to the left-center gap that drove in Tansky, and Beebe scored on a double to right by Priante for a 6-1 lead.

Oswego cut its deficit in half with two runs in the third. Aleah Yaizzo singled through the left side, stole second and advanced to third on a fielder's choice. Brianna LoMonaco was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on fielder's indifference. Mennig hit a two-out blooper to short right field and scored both Yaizzo and LoMonaco.

Hamilton tallied one run in the third. After an Oswego pitching change, Samantha Smith '23 stepped up to the plate and doubled to left field. Smith advanced to third on a passed ball and made it 7-3 when Madison Hinojos '24 reached first on a fielding error by the third baseman.

Hamilton added another run in the fourth. Beebe led off with a single through the left side and Priante followed with a single up the middle. Shelby McVey '22 reached on a fielder's choice that put runners at the corners, and Beebe scored on a wild pitch.

Oswego pulled within 8-5 in the fifth. Madison Hoeflich singled through the right side and Mennig nailed a triple to right field that drove in Hoeflich. Mattison Phinney's single to right center scored Mennig.

Hamilton scored its last run in the sixth. Tansky reached on another infield single and stole second and third base. Beebe reached first on an error by the right fielder and Tansky scored easily.

The Lakers rallied for two runs but left two on base in the final inning. Phinney hit a one-out single up the middle and advanced to scoring position on a wild pitch. Samantha Morgan drew a walk and Jessica Thayer plated Phinney with a single to right field. Morgan crossed home plate on a Yaizzo single to right, but Tansky secured the last two outs on a fielder's choice and a ground out to Hinojos at first.

Game 2

Dubois hit a two-run homer in the top of the fourth that powered the Lakers to its fifth victory of the season against 12 losses.

Beebe (7-1) allowed just five hits and collected seven strikeouts in seven innings as she took her first loss. She has issued just two walks in 47.1 innings this season. Smith tallied two of Hamilton's eight hits.

Beebe retired the Lakers in order in the first and second innings, and in similar fashion to Game 1, Hamilton struck first. Quinn led off the second inning with a single up the middle and Smith singled through the left side. McVey advanced both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Mikayla Worzel '23 drew a walk and Hinojos forced in Quinn with a bases-loaded walk.

Oswego took over in the fourth inning with three runs. LoMonaco singled to right center and Mennig followed with a single to right, but advanced to third on an outfield error that scored LoMonaco. Dubois worked the count and hit a deep shot over the left field fence for the 3-1 lead.

Hamilton had its chances in the fourth and fifth innings with runners in scoring position, but didn't get the timely hit. Oswego retired the Continentals in order in the sixth and seventh innings.
