Amherst College's PJ Clementi and Brock Gonzalez scored four goals apiece and the Mammoths rallied for an 11-9 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Amherst's Pratt Field on Saturday afternoon.

Hamilton and the Mammoths were playing their 2022 season openers. The Continentals led 4-2 after one quarter and 5-4 at the break. Hamilton is back on the field on Tuesday, March 8 at Utica University for a non-conference game at 5 p.m.

Nationally ranked No. 19 Amherst scored six of the first seven goals after halftime and took the lead for the first time. Clementi added two assists, Tanyr Krummenacher found the back of the net twice, Nicholas Kopp won 13 of 20 faceoffs, and Carson Marano made seven saves. Jack McHugh caused three turnovers and Marano and Kopp picked up six ground balls apiece. The Mammoths held a 46-34 shot advantage.

Seamus Fagan '23 stopped a career-high 20 shots for the Continentals.
Torben Wunderle '23 led the offense with two goals and two assists, and
Rowan Brumbaugh '23 notched two more goals.
Quin Crowley '22 won nine faceoffs and scooped up four ground balls. Brumbaugh chipped in four ground balls and
Marc Welch '22, who earned 2021 all-NESCAC team honors, caused a pair of turnovers.

Brumbaugh scored both of his goals in the first quarter and Hamilton jumped out to a 4-1 lead just 7:30 into the contest. The Continentals still led 5-3 after Wunderle's unassisted tally with 11:33 left in the second quarter.

Clementi's man-up goal on a pass from Bayard Demallie gave Amherst its first lead at 6-5 with 2:08 remaining in the third quarter. Clementi scored again with five seconds to go in the third for a 7-5 edge, and the Mammoths led the rest of the way.

Tim Sommer '22 stopped the bleeding momentarily 40 seconds into the fourth quarter with his goal on a feed from Wunderle. Amherst responded with three straight goals and led 10-6 with 11:48 left.

Hamilton tried to come back on consecutive goals by
Troy Pollock '25, Jayme Wilde '25 and Wunderle, and the Continentals pulled within one at 10-9 with 2:44 remaining. Clementi clinched it for the Mammoths on his fourth goal with just 24 seconds to go. Hamilton didn't attempt another shot after the Continentals cut their deficit to one.
