Baseball clinches sweep with dramatic extra-inning victory

Sattinger '24 hit and pitched the Continentals to two wins against SUNY Cobleskill

Hamilton College's Jackson Sattinger '24 led the Continentals to a non-conference doubleheader sweep of the SUNY Cobleskill Fighting Tigers with his arm and his bat at Lake Myrtle Sports Park in Auburndale, Fla., on Wednesday.

Hamilton improved its overall record to 8-5 with a 12-5 win in Game 1 and a 7-6 victory in nine innings in Game 2. The Continentals wrap up their Florida trip with another non-conference twinbill against St. Olaf College on Friday, March 25 starting at 10 a.m. The games will be held at Northeast Regional Park in Davenport.

Cobleskill, who is a member of the North Atlantic Conference, dropped to 6-8 this season. The Fighting Tigers committed five errors in the opener and led 5-1 in the top of the sixth inning in the nightcap.

Game 1

Hamilton banged out 14 hits in this seven-inning game and led 10-1 after three. Sattinger finished with three hits and two runs batted in. Brady Slinger '22 singled twice, was hit by a pitch twice, scored three runs and stole four bases. Ethan Harrast '23 went 2-for-2 and drove in two runs, and Matt Kinne '25 had two hits, including a double, and two RBI.

Peter Jones '25 recorded his first collegiate victory as he allowed two earned runs on 10 hits in five innings. Jamie Hauswirth '22 pitched two scoreless innings and struck out three in relief. Hauswirth lowered his earned run average to 2.70 in five appearances.

The Continentals scored twice in the top of the first inning. Slinger's infield single drove in Phil Bernstein '23, and Slinger scored on an RBI groundout by Greg Kopp '25. Hamilton added five more runs in the second. Kinne, Sattinger and Jack Herlihy '22 boasted RBI singles and Harrast drove in Kinne with a sacrifice fly.

Cobleskill got one back in the bottom of the second, but the Continentals responded with three runs in the third for a commanding 10-1 advantage. Adam Wijaya '22 was hit by a pitch and Kinne plated him with a double to left-center field. Harrast's single to right center drove in Kinne, and Harrast later came around on three errors.

Game 2

Hamilton tied the score with a run in the bottom of the seventh and, after the Fighting Tigers took a 6-5 lead in the ninth, the Continentals won it with two in the bottom of the inning. Sattinger drew a leadoff walk and Jay Schlaefer '23 came in to pinch run. Jack Eshleman '25 also walked and Kopp drove in the tying run on a single through the left side. Ethan Murphy '22 was hit by a pitch and loaded the bases for Wijaya, who walked it off with a single up the middle.

Kinne helped lead the offense with three hits. Harrast singled, doubled and drove in two runs, and Gavin Schaefer-Hood '22 was 2-for-3 with a double. Bernstein ended up with two singles for his fifth multi-hit game this season.

Sattinger relieved Jack Clougherty '23 on the mound in the top of the fifth and allowed one earned run on three hits and two walks in five innings. The win is his first at Hamilton and his 11 strikeouts are the most for a Continentals pitcher since March 19, 2015. Clougherty allowed two earned runs in four innings and fanned four.

Hamilton trailed 5-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth but scored three runs in the frame. Shane Dux '24 led off with a single to left and Charlie O'Brien '24 came in to pinch run. Schaefer-Hood singled between first and second base and Kinne loaded the bases with a single to right. Bernstein drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly and Harrast cracked a two-out, two-run double to left that made it 5-4.

Sattinger sent the game to extra innings with a leadoff home run to right-center field in the bottom of the seventh. The round-tripper is his second in the last three games. Sattinger is second on the team with a .417 batting average and leads the Continentals with 17 RBI.
