Baseball falls to Elmhurst, Griffin '24 hits first home run

Continentals allow seven unearned runs, fell behind 8-0 in the sixth inning

Elmhurst College broke a scoreless tie with six runs in the fifth inning and the Bluejays posted a 15-6 non-conference win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Chain O'Lakes Stadium in Winter Haven, Fla., on Sunday afternoon.
 
Elmhurst, a member of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) improved its record to .500 on the season at 5-5. The Bluejays banged out 14 hits including four doubles, a triple and a home run.
 
All of Elmhurst's runs in the top of the fifth inning were unearned on three Hamilton errors. The Bluejays added a pair of runs in the sixth, three in the seventh, one in the eighth and three in the ninth.
 
Hamilton (6-4 overall) scored its first run in the sixth powered by a two-out double to right field by Phil Bernstein '23. Jay Schlaefer '23 was sent in to pinch run for Bernstein and Adam Wijaya '22 drove him in with a single through the right side.
 
The Continentals plated a run in the seventh. Matt Kinne '25 doubled to deep left center. Gavin Schaefer-Hood '22 advanced Kinne on a groundout and Kinne scored on a sinking line drive to left field by Jack Clougherty '23 that went for a double.
 
Hamilton had its best inning in the eighth with three runs on three hits. Schlaefer singled up the middle and Kenny Rix '25 roped the ball to left center for two bases, scoring Schlaefer. Jack Griffin '24 finished the rally with a two-run homer to right center. Griffin's homer was his first with the Continentals.
 
Hamilton scored one more run in the ninth. Ethan Harrast '23 was hit by a pitch and Shane Dux '24 smacked a pinch-hit double to left center that drove in Harrast.
 
Hamilton's eight hits came off different bats. Griffin drove in two runs and Schlaefer scored twice. Peter Jones '25 pitched a perfect first inning.
 
The Continentals are back in action on Tuesday, March 22 against Lawrence University at 11:30 a.m. at Northeast Regional Park in Davenport, Fla.
