Baseball improves to 6-3 with doubleheader sweep in Florida

Continentals allow three runs against Franklin & Marshall, lowers team ERA to 2.86

Hamilton College pitcher Gavin Schaefer-Hood '22 broke the program record for career wins and the Continentals swept the Franklin & Marshall College Diplomats at Chain O'Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Fla., on Saturday.

The Continentals improved to 6-3 overall with a 7-2 victory in Game 1 and a 6-1 triumph in Game 2. Hamilton racked up six hits and six walks in the first game and eight hits, three walks and two hit batsman in the second. The Continentals are back in action against Elmhurst University for a single game on Sunday, March 20 at 2 p.m.

Game 1

Ethan Harrast '23 posted two singles, two stolen bases, and drove in a pair. Phil Bernstein '23 collected his second home run this season, walked twice and scored three times.

Hamilton grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Bernstein walked and advanced to second on a balk. Harrast hit a liner to right center that scored Bernstein and eventually stole second base. Jackson Sattinger '24 drove Harrast home on a single through the right side.

Franklin & Marshall got a run back in the second, but the Continentals responded with four in the bottom half for a 6-1 lead. Adam Wijaya '22 led off with a single up the middle and moved into scoring position on an Ethan Murphy '22 walk. Jackson Johns '24 advanced Wijaya and Murphy on a sacrifice bunt. Bernstein drew his second walk of the game and, after a Diplomats pitching change, Harrast took first on a walk that forced in Wijaya. Brady Slinger '22 hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored Murphy, and Sattinger put two in scoring position after a fielder's choice. Jack Herlihy '22 roped a single up the middle that plated Bernstein and Harrast.

The Continentals added one more run in the sixth on Bernstein's third career homer down the left field line.

Schaefer-Hood improved to 2-0 this season and 17-8 for his Hamilton career. He struck out four and allowed one unearned run on three hits in five innings. Michael Ghiorsi '23 gave up one run on two hits in two innings of relief.

Game 2

Bernstein singled, doubled and scored three runs for the second straight game. Slinger added two hits and Harrast and Matt Kinne '25 plated two runs apiece.

The Continentals tallied two runs in the top of the first. Slinger produced a two-out single up the middle, Sattinger singled through the right side and Kinne hit a deep shot to the center field fence that scored both runners.

Hamilton added two more runs in the second inning with two outs. Johns singled to left and advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt. Bernstein hit a liner up the middle that scored Johns, and Harrast's single in the hole between first and second plated Bernstein.

Already ahead 4-0, the Continentals scored a run in the fourth inning on back-to-back walks and steals by Bernstein and Harrast. Slinger's sacrifice fly brought Bernstein home. Franklin & Marshall (6-8 overall) scored their lone run in the bottom half on an infield error.

Hamilton struck one last time in the sixth inning. Bernstein doubled to deep left field and advanced to third on a throwing error by the shortstop. Harrast collected an RBI on a sacrifice fly to left.

Jack Eshleman '25 secured his first career win on the mound, allowing one unearned run on five hits and no walks with five strikeouts in 4.2 innings pitched. Jamie Hauswirth '22 and Carl Maxwell '22 combined on 2.1 shutout innings of relief.
