Women's basketball extends win streak to five games out in Ohio

Shay '24, Hall '24 and Sehring '23 led the Continentals to an 18-point victory over RIT

Hamilton College's Courtney Shay '24 dropped in 17 points and the Continentals cruised to a 68-50 win against the Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers in the Baldwin Wallace University Invitational at Ursprung Gymnasium on Thursday night.
 
Season Update
Hamilton extended its win streak to five games and improved to 7-1 overall. RIT, which is a member of the Liberty League, dipped to 4-3.
 
How It Happened
  • The Tigers recorded the first basket and led for about one minute.
  • The Continentals scored the next six points and held the lead the rest of the game. Emma Sehring '23 grabbed a defensive rebound and went coast-to-coast for a layup. Emily Hall '24 made a pull-up jumper in the lane and added two free throws for a 6-2 advantage.
  • A 3-pointer by Maria Mercado Rengel '24 gave Hamilton its first double-digit lead at 16-6 with 1:50 left in the first quarter.
  • The Continentals led 16-7 after one and opened the second quarter with a 13-7 run for a 15-point cushion at 29-14 with 5:55 remaining. Shay made a pair of 3-pointers during the spurt.
  • Hamilton took its largest lead of 18 points for the first time at 36-18 with 1:26 to go when Olivia Davis '23 found Mercado Rengel for a layup.
  • RIT scored the last six points of the quarter and closed to within 12 at 36-24 at the break.
  • The Continentals led by double digits for the entire second half. Hamilton went up by 18 twice more in the third quarter. Hall's jumper made it 47-29 with 4:54 left, and Hall dished to Sehring for a layup and a 51-33 advantage with 3:08 remaining.
  • The Continentals were up 55-38 at the end of three quarters and led by 12 or more throughout the fourth. Sehring passed to Davis for a layup in the final seconds and accounted for the final score.
 
Notes
  • Shay was a perfect 4 of 4 from beyond the arc and has scored 35 points in the last two games.
  • Hall scored a season-high 15 points and added seven assists. She leads the NESCAC with 5.5 assists per game.
  • Sehring posted her third double-double this season and the fourth of her career with 11 points and 10 rebounds. She also handed out five assists and blocked two shots.
  • Davis contributed eight points and eight boards off the bench.
  • Emma Waite led the Tigers with 21 points, eight rebounds, five steals and four assists.
  • RIT committed just seven turnovers but was outrebounded 55-30.
  • The Tigers were credited with 12 steals, which helped lead to 20 Hamilton turnovers.
  • The Continentals shot better than 50 percent (17-33) during the second and third quarters.
  • RIT struggled with its shot as the Tigers were 26.9 percent from the floor, including 6 of 31 from long range, and 8-for-15 at the free-throw line.

Hamilton plays in the tournament's championship game against undefeated and nationally ranked No. 8 Baldwin Wallace on Friday, Dec. 30 at 3 p.m.
