Men's hockey takes team title at Potsdam's North Country Tourney

Continentals defeated the host Bears 4-1 on Sunday and went 2-0 in the tournament

Hamilton College's Cade Groton '23 scored two goals and Jack Grant '24 made 25 saves in the Continentals' 4-1 win over SUNY Potsdam in the 2022 North Country Tournament at Potsdam's Maxcy Ice Arena on Sunday.
 
Season Update
Hamilton was declared the North Country Tournament champion and evened its record at 2-2-0. The Bears dropped to 2-8-0 overall.
 
How It Happened
  • After a scoreless first period, Garrett McArthur gave Potsdam the lead 5:35 into the second.
  • James Philpott '25 put the Continentals on the scoreboard with 8:27 left in the period. Ryan Brown '25 and Jackson Krock '26 had the assists.
  • Matt Gellerman '24 gave Hamilton the lead on a power-play goal with 1:23 remaining in the second. Gellerman scored with seven seconds left of a 5-on-3 for the Continentals' first power-play goal this season. Fred Allaire '23 and Philpott had the assists.
  • Groton made it 3-1 just 56 seconds later on a pass from Ben Zimmerman '26.
  • The Bears pulled their goaltender for an extra skater with 1:48 to go in the third period and Groton made them pay 21 seconds later when he scored into the empty net. Nick Hawkins '23 and Carson Hall '26 collected the assists.

  • Groton leads Hamilton with three goals this season.
  • Philpott is tied with Groton for the team lead in points with three.
  • Gellerman scored his 12th career goal with the Continentals.
  • Brown registered his third career assist while Krock picked up his second this season.
  • Allaire, who won 14 of 24 faceoffs, has 16 career assists and 26 points.
  • Zimmerman recorded his first point at Hamilton.
  • Hawkins has 15 career assists and 22 points with the Continentals.
  • Hall notched his first assist at Hamilton.
  • Grant, who recorded his first win with the Continentals, made 14 of his 25 stops in the third period. He has a 2.03 goals against average and .929 save percentage in two starts.
  • Sean McAvoy '23 won 8 of 12 faceoffs for Hamilton.
  • Connor Green turned away 30 shots for Potsdam.
  • The Bears were 0-for-4 with two shots on power-play opportunities.
