Sehring ’23 leads women’s basketball in opening win over Swarthmore

Senior registered a career-high 16 points and second career double-double for the Continentals

Hamilton College's Emma Sehring '23 poured in a career-high 16 points and the Continentals posted a 62-57 win against the Swarthmore College Garnet in Vassar College's Hochberg Family Tip-Off Tournament at the Athletics and Fitness Center on Friday evening. 
 
How It Happened
  • Swarthmore jumped out to an early 7-2 lead before Hamilton went on a 6-0 run and took its first lead at 8-7 with 5:05 left in the first quarter. Sehring, Maria Mercado Rengel '24 and Taylor Lambo '26 had buckets during the spurt. 
  • Althea Hill '26 hit back-to-back 3-pointers and tied the score at 14-14 with 24 ticks left in the first. 
  • Sehring and Lambo combined for six points as the Continentals got off to a hot start in the second quarter. 
  • Swarthmore went on an 11-4 run and took a 25-24 lead with 4:24 remaining. The Continentals quickly responded with a 3-pointer by Hill, a free throw by Lambo and two free throws by Mercado Rengel for a 30-27 advantage at the break. 
  • Swarthmore used a 7-3 spurt for a 34-33 lead with 6:06 remaining in the third quarter. 
  • The Continentals used a trio of free throws and layups by Emily Hall '24, Sehring and Oliva Davis '23 for a 42-41 edge entering the fourth quarter.
  • There were five ties and six lead changes in the third quarter alone. 
  • Swarthmore took its last lead at 46-44 two minutes into the fourth after a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer. 
  • Mercado Rengel hit a shot from beyond the arc and gave Hamilton a 47-46 advantage. 
  • Lambo hit a free throw and later added a layup before Sehring scored Hamilton's next six points on three layups for Hamilton's largest lead of the night at 56-48 with 3:42 left. 
  • Hall and Lambo secured the win at the line as they went 6-for-8 from the stripe in the last 46 seconds. The Garnet pulled within three points in the final seconds.
  • Hamilton held a 43-39 advantage on the glass.
  • The Continentals helped force 26 turnovers by making eight steals.  
  • The Garnet shot 36.2 percent from the field (21-58) and 84.6 percent at the charity stripe (11-13). 
  • Swarthmore registered 18 bench points to Hamilton's four.  
Notes 
  • Hamilton (1-0) picked up its fifth consecutive season-opening win and fourth straight under head coach Mahogany Green
  • Swarthmore (0-1) was playing its first game this season as well. 
  • Sehring tied a career best with 11 rebounds and recorded her second career double-double. 
  • Lambo had an impressive debut for the Continentals with 15 points and five boards. 
  • Mercado Rengel chipped in 12 points. 
  • Hill shot 50 percent (3-6) from beyond the arc for nine points.
  • Hall contributed 10 boards, six points and three steals. 
  • Swarthmore's Alyssa Hayashi went a perfect 3 of 3 from the 3-point line and boasted 17 points with four assists. 
  • Raven Richardson tallied 10 points and eight boards for the Garnet. 
  • Anna Hansson knocked down 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in just 17 minutes off the bench.

  • Hamilton will face Vassar (1-1) on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 4:30 p.m.
