Volleyball drops five-set NESCAC marathon to Bowdoin

McClintic ’24, Morelli ‘24 and Bergeron ’26 register double-doubles for the Continentals

Bowdoin College's Lauren Lange led all players with 17 kills and the Polar Bears defeated the Hamilton College Continentals in an intense, five-set NESCAC match (22-25, 21-25, 25-20, 25-18, 16-14) at Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Friday evening. 
 
How It Happened
  • Down 20-17 in the opening set, Hamilton scored eight of the final 10 points including kills by four different players.
  • Hamilton prevailed in the second set after taking the final three points on a kill and two blocks by Maggie Nichols '26.
  • The Polar Bears came out swinging in the third set as they registered a match-high .243 hitting percentage. Bowdoin's 7-1 run turned a 3-0 deficit into a 7-4 lead. After the Continentals recorded three straight points and tied the score, the Polar Bears went in front for good with another 7-1 spurt and forced a fourth set. 
  • Hamilton had a 17-16 edge in the fourth set, but Bowdoin closed with a 9-1 run. Lange had three kills and helped the Polar Bears force a fifth set. 
  • Hamilton held a three-point lead at 7-4 in the deciding set before Bowdoin evened the score, and then went on a 5-2 spurt for a 12-9 advantage. Hamilton responded with four consecutive points and took back the lead at 13-12. The Polar Bears scored three of the next four points on kills and the match ended on a ball-handling error by the Continentals. 
  • Both Hamilton and Bowdoin tallied 56 kills. 
  • The Continentals collected a season-high 11 blocks.  
Notes 
  • Hamilton moved to 6-5 overall and 1-4 in the conference. 
  • Bowdoin improved to 6-6 (3-3 NESCAC). 
  • Summer McClintic '24 notched her first double-double of the season with 13 kills and a career-high 20 digs.
  • Melissa Morelli '24 earned a double-double as she dished out 39 assists and came up with 14 digs.
  • Rylee Bergeron '26 collected her second double-double of the year with 13 kills and 13 digs and added four aces. 
  • Chiara Morley-McLaughlin '24 posted a team-high .417 hitting percentage on 11 kills and led Hamilton with five blocks.
  • Maggie Nichols '26 proved big at the net with a season-high five blocks.
  • Kate Carman '24 slammed down 13 kills and collected three blocks. 
  • The Polar Bears' Maya White added 24 digs. 
  • Mary John led Bowdoin at the net with four blocks. 
  • Ella Haugen registered 43 assists and 14 digs.
Next Match
  • Hamilton will host Connecticut College for another NESCAC matchup on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 2 p.m. Hamilton will honor Sophia Bernstein '23 and Deirdre Corrigan '23 during a Senior Day ceremony prior to the start of the match.
