No. 14 field hockey edged 3-2 by No. 5 Amherst in NESCAC play

Grace '25 and Tratnyek '26 scored the goals for the Continentals

Amherst College's Sam Maynard scored two goals, including the game-winner with 4:27 left in the fourth quarter, and the Mammoths edged the Hamilton College Continentals 3-2 in NESCAC action at Hamilton's Goodfriend Field on Saturday afternoon.
 
Season Update
  • The nationally ranked No. 14 Continentals dropped to 8-6 overall and 4-6 in the conference with their third straight loss – all against ranked teams.
  • Hamilton will either be the seventh or eighth seed for the NESCAC championship. The quarterfinals are Saturday, Oct. 29.
  • No. 5 Amherst improved to 12-2 overall and 7-2 in the conference with its 10th straight win.
 
How It Happened
  • Abbey Kays gave the Mammoths a 1-0 lead following a penalty corner just 1:16 into the first quarter.
  • Maynard's first goal of the afternoon made it 2-0 with 2:49 left in the first.
  • Delaney Grace '25 put the Continentals on the scoreboard on a penalty stroke goal with 9:22 remaining in the third quarter.
  • Claire Tratnyek '26 drew Hamilton even on an unassisted goal with 7:45 to go in the fourth quarter. It was the Continentals' last shot.
  • Maynard's game-winner was on a penalty corner and was assisted by Kays.
 
Notes
  • Grace, who is 2-for-2 on penalty strokes this season, is second on the team with five goals and 13 points.
  • Tratnyek's goal is her first at Hamilton.
  • Abby Griffin '26 made four saves for the Continentals.
  • Sara Nidus was credited with four stops for Amherst.
  • The Mammoths held a 14-6 shot advantage and were awarded 10 penalty corners to Hamilton's six.
  • The Continentals honored Camille Donaghey '23, Maura Holden '23, Tracey Stafford '23, Emma Stephens '23 and Kiera Wax '23 before the game.
