Hamilton College's
Olivia Zubarik '25 scored late in the second half and
Caity Smith '23 made a career-high nine saves as the Continentals and Williams College Ephs played to a 1-1 tie in NESCAC action at Hamilton's Love Field on Wednesday.
The conference match was the season opener for both teams. Nationally ranked No. 12 Williams had won the last nine meetings between the two after they tied 0-0 back in 2012.
Zubarik's goal came with 1:18 left in regulation and
Shayna Polsky '25 picked up the assist. Both players were making their first collegiate appearances.
Rylie Mutton '23 took a free kick from about 35 yards out and played it into the box where it was headed by a Williams player.
Olivia Morrow '24 headed the loose ball towards the goal mouth and it found Polsky, who shot quickly from 6 yards out. Goalkeeper Chelsea Taylor (two saves) came off her line and stopped Polsky's shot, but the deflection went directly to Zubarik and she booted the ball into the back of the net from point-blank range before Taylor could recover.
The Ephs nearly won it in the 106th minute during the second sudden-victory overtime period. Williams took a corner kick -- its seventh of the day -- and the ball was headed twice by Hamilton defenders. Victoria Laino played the loose ball as she trapped it with her chest down to her feet and got off a right-footed shot as she was falling down just 6 yards from the goal. Smith barely tipped the shot into the right post and the ball was kicked away by the Continentals.
Ava Simunovic broke the ice in the 54th minute for the Ephs. Mikayla Kappes bent a corner kick into the center of the box and Simunovic buried a powerful low header from about 10 yards away.
Williams held a 17-7 shot advantage and Hamilton finished with one corner kick. The match was delayed for about 45 minutes midway through the first half due to lightning in the area.
The Continentals are at Bates College for another NESCAC match on Saturday, Sept. 11 at 11 a.m.
