Wesleyan University's Logan Tomlinson caught two touchdown passes and the Cardinals defeated the Hamilton College Continentals 30-14 at Wesleyan's Corwin Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Hammitlon (1-1 NESCAC) fell behind 27-0 early in the third quarter. The Continentals generated 10 first downs and 250 yards of offense, committed three turnovers and had the ball for less than 21 minutes. Hamilton travels to Colby College for another conference contest on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m.
The Cardinals (2-0) gained 419 yards, passed for four touchdowns and were 8 of 14 on third-down conversions. Ashton Scott was 8 of 15 passing for 134 yards and two scores, and David Estevez was 8 of 12 for 91 yards and two more touchdowns and ran for 69 yards. Charlie McPhee had 100 yards rushing on 20 carries and Tomlinson posted 81 yards receiving. Joe Schaefer led the defense with seven tackles.
Joe Cairns '25 was 15 of 21 passing for 219 yards and ran for a touchdown in his first game under center for the Continentals.
Justin Moran '25 scored a rushing touchdown for the second straight game and
Drew Granski '22 boasted a career-high 100 yards receiving on six catches.
George Johnson '23 was credited with a career-best 10 stops including his first sack.
Matt LoPresti '23 also recorded his first sack and
Christian Snell '23 blocked an extra-point attempt.
Wesleyan drove 86 yards in 11 plays on their opening possession and scored on a 5-yard pass from Estevez to tight end Matt Luttenberger with 9:26 left in the first quarter. After Hamilton went three-and-out on its first drive, the Cardinals went on a 61-yard drive that took more than eight minutes off the clock. The drive was capped by Scott's 10-yard touchdown toss to Tomlinson with 13:43 remaining in the second quarter.
The Continentals punted on their next two possessions and then muffed a Wesleyan punt at their own 27 that was recovered at the Hamilton 20. Three plays later, Scott found Matt Simco for a 17-yard touchdown with 27 seconds to go before halftime. The Cardinals took a 20-0 lead into the break.
The Continentals went three-and-out after they took the opening kickoff of the second half and Wesleyan took over at its own 37. Estevez ran for 28 yards on first down and completed three straight passes, the last of which went to Tomlinson for a 16-yard touchdown.with 11:15 left in the third quarter.
Hamilton finally got on the scoreboard midway through the third quarter. Cairns found Granski for 36 yards on third down and on the next play completed a 34-yard pass to
Will Budington '22. Moran busted into the end zone from four yards out on the following snap with 7:36 remaining in the third.
The Cardinals' next drive lasted nearly six minutes and ended with a 24-yard field goal by Daniel Yoon with 1:38 to go in the third. On the Continentals' first drive in the fourth quarter, Cairns completed two straight passes to Granski for a total of 42 yards. Cairns then scampered in from the Wesleyan 5 two plays later with 11:20 left. The drive was set up by a nice punt return by Snell that gave Hamilton the ball on the Cardinals' side of the field.
Trailing 30-14 early in the fourth quarter, all hopes of a comeback vanished for the Continentals after Wesleyan held the ball for nearly seven minutes. The 11-play drive ended with a 37-yard punt that went out-of-bounds at the Hamilton 11. The Continentals' last drive ended with an interception by Jack Nally.Â
