O'Dowd '25 scores first goal in men's soccer tie with Ithaca

Continentals finally returned to Love Field for first time in 23 months

Hamilton College's Luke O'Dowd '25 scored his first collegiate goal and the Continentals played to a 1-1 tie with the Ithaca College Bombers in non-conference action at Hamilton's Love Field on Tuesday.

The Continentals (2-2-1 overall) were playing their home opener nearly two weeks after their first match of the season. Hamilton is back at Love Field on Saturday, Sept. 25 against nationally ranked No. 13 Middlebury College for a NESCAC match at 1:30 p.m.

O'Dowd made the most of his 15 minutes on the field. The Continentals went on the counterattack from deep in their defensive end in the 36th minute and eventually Charles Hawthorn '25 gained control of the ball on Hamilton's offensive side. Hawthorn warded off a defender and slid a short pass to Luke Peplowski '25 at the center of the top of the box. Peplowski neatly one-touched a chip pass to his left and caught O'Dowd in stride. O'Dowd poked a shot as he slid to the ground near the edge of the six-yard box and the ball squirted between the legs of the charging goalkeeper and rolled into the net. All three players picked up their first points with the Continentals.

Ithaca (2-4-3) took seven corner kicks in the first half but trailed 1-0 at the break. The Bombers finally evened the score in the 86th minute on a goal by Drew Cohn '22. Ali Kapasi '22 played a corner kick towards the top of the 18-yard box and Cohn hammered a one-timer from about 20 yards out that banged off the bottom of the crossbar near the right side of the goal with 4:27 left.

Hamilton had a great chance to win midway through the first sudden-victory overtime period when Hawthorn ran onto a great lead pass down the left side, beat his defender and was tripped up from behind about 10 yards from the goal. The Continentals were awarded the penalty kick with 4:35 remaining, but the hard, low shot sailed just wide of the left post.

In the second extra period Hamilton had two corner kicks and a shot on goal, and Ithaca took a pair of corner kicks and two shots on frame. Ben Ziegler '24 made six saves for the Continentals and Lee Folger '22 stopped three shots for the visitors. The Bombers held a 19-12 shot advantage and a 13-6 edge in corner kicks.
