Women's soccer knocks off No. 4 Amherst on the road in overtime

Rylie Mutton '23 scores early in the extra period as Continentals defeat Mammoths for first time

The Hamilton College Continentals defeated nationally ranked No. 4 Amherst College for the first time since entering the New England Small College Athletic Conference -- 2-1 in overtime -- on Saturday afternoon at Amherst's Hitchcock Field.

The Continentals remained undefeated with a record of 2-0-1 overall and in the NESCAC. Amherst lost for the first time in four matches after the Mammoths outscored their opponents 17-0 in their three victories.

The game-winning goal came 2:27 into the first sudden-victory overtime period. Rylie Mutton '23 fired the ball towards the net from the far right side. Amherst goalkeeper Mika Fisher (four saves) made the initial stop, but a scrum developed quickly at the front of the net. Olivia Morrow '24 succeeded at knocking the ball loose before the Mammoths were able to gain control, and Mutton ran in from the right wing and kicked it to the far side of the net for her second goal in as many matches.

The Continentals opened the scoring at 78:08 following a tightly contested, but scoreless, first half. The Amherst defense turned the ball over to Morrow in front of the net and she kicked it in off Fisher. Morrow's goal is the first of her collegiate career.

The Mammoths tied the score late in regulation. Alexa Juarez received a penalty kick at 85:25 following a physical defensive play by goalkeeper Caity Smith '23, and Juarez shot into the upper right corner of the net. Smith finished with eight saves and has a .905 save percentage in 247-plus minutes.

The Continentals will play their non-conference opener against Union College at Hamilton's Ferguson Field at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 21.
