Women's soccer stays red hot, blanks Union in non-conference

Hyla Mosher '23 scored a pair of goals and Caity Smith '23 made seven stops

Hamilton College's Hyla Mosher '23 scored two goals and Caity Smith '23 recorded her second career shutout as the Continentals posted a 3-0 victory over the Union College Dutchwomen in non-conference action at Hamilton's Ferguson Field on Tuesday afternoon.

The Continentals improved to 3-0-1 overall as they dominated play. Hamilton held a commanding 28-10 shot advantage and took nine corner kicks to Union's none. The Continentals host nationally ranked No. 22 Middlebury College for a NESCAC match on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 11 a.m.

The multi-goal contest is the second this year for Mosher, who leads the team with four goals and has a dozen for her Hamilton career. Smith made seven saves and owns a 0.53 goals against average and .929 save percentage. NESCAC Player of the Week Rylie Mutton '23 scored a goal for the third straight match.

Mosher made it 1-0 in the 32nd minute. She took a long pass from Rose McCullough '23 down the right sideline and dribbled into the right side of the 18-yard box. Mosher maneuvered around two defenders about 10 yards from the goal and cracked a high, right-footed shot inside the right post from the top-right corner of the six-yard box.

Mutton doubled the lead 2:40 later. Olivia Zubarik '25 took a corner kick that was headed out of the box, but Mutton got to the loose ball first and one-timed a well-placed shot into the top-right corner of the net from about 22 yards out. Abby Mitty (seven saves) leaped and was able to get a glove on Mutton's shot, but it wasn't enough.

Mosher closed out the scoring in the 88th minute. The Continentals forced a turnover near midfield and eventually Leah Basel '24 took possession. Basel threaded a lead pass up to a wide open Mosher on the right side and she dribbled into the box. Mosher unleashed a perfect shot from about 15 yards out that curled around the right post and snuck under the crossbar.
