Hamilton College's
Ben Ziegler '24 made a season-high seven saves in the first half of the Continentals' 1-0 NESCAC loss against the Amherst College Mammoths on Saturday afternoon at Amherst's Hitchcock Field.
Ziegler made four saves before Amherst's Kyle Kelly scored in the 17th minute off a corner kick from the left side by Ada Okorogheye that landed and got lost in a scramble inside the box in front of the net.
Hamilton (2-2-0, 0-2 NESCAC) had an opportunity to tie the score in the 31st minute on a free kick by
Justin D'Alessandro '23 but Amherst's Bernie White (five saves) made the save. Ziegler made three more saves and three shots were blocked by Hamilton defenders before the end of the first half.
Hamilton had three scoring opportunities in the second half. One came in the 67
th minute when
Luke O'Dowd '25 booted the ball from deep on the right side and sent it soaring near the top-left corner, but White was able to knock it down and out of play.
Another came in the 79
th minute when
Matt Jordan '22 fed the ball to
Greg Zimmerman '22 from the top of the box. Zimmerman took a low shot from the right side and White dropped down to make the save. The third opportunity came in the 85
th minute. Jordan passed the ball down the middle of the field to
Luke Ehrenfreund '25 who shot it into the open right side. White dove and punched it out for the save.
Kai Haesslein '24 made two saves in the second half and there was one team save by the Continentals. The Mammoths improved to 3-1-0 overall and 1-1 in the NESCAC.Â
Hamilton will play non-conference opponent Ithaca College in the Continentals' home opener on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 4:30 p.m. on Love Field.
