Hamilton College's
Ben Gardner '21 scored three goals and had five assists for a career-high eight points in the Continentals' 13-10 loss to the Trinity College Bantams at Trinity's Jessee/Miller Field on Sunday afternoon.
Trinity (3-0, 1-0 NESCAC) outshot Hamilton 61-35 and won 16 of 25 faceoffs. The Continentals were successful on 15 of 16 clear attempts and picked up 20 ground balls.
The Bantams scored the first goal and
Alex Choy '21 tied the score 4:08 later.
Carter Hampson '24 passed the ball to Choy from Hamilton's defensive end and Choy ran from midfield down the right side and shot from 20 yards out.
Trinity tallied three more goals before
Christian Byrne '24 scored his first collegiate goal. Gardner cut in from the left side and found Byrne in front with 2:25 remaining in the first quarter as the Continentals pulled within 4-2.
The Bantams started the second quarter with three more goals for a 7-2 lead, but the Continentals answered with four consecutive goals and trailed 7-6 with 2:55 remaining in the half.
The duo of Byrne and Gardner did it again with 6:24 left. Gardner ran out from behind the net around the left side and found Byrne, who scored in the top-right corner ffom 15 yards out.
Jacob Sichlau '23 scored in the bottom-left corner from 10 yards out after Gardner passed it to him from his knees.
Tim Murray '24 scored with a diving backhanded shot in front of the net after he scooped up a ground ball and ran through four defenders.
Jeremy Hazzard '21 scored from the left side 10 yards out after Gardner passed to him from behind the net.
Trinity ended the second quarter with two more goals and headed into halftime with a 9-6 advantage.
Both teams scored one goal in the third quarter and three in the fourth. With 9:07 to go in the third quarter, Gardner ran 30 yards with the ball, broke through three defenders and scored on a diving shot as Hamilton pulled within 9-7.
Gardner scored a man-up goal 33 seconds into the fourth quarter after Murray passed the ball to him in front of the net and Gardner shot low. With 12:50 left, Gardner scored his third goal and put the Continentals within one at 10-9.
Johnny Oblak '24 carried the ball up the left side from Hamilton's defensive end and passed to Gardner who ran through two defenders, spun around and scored from his knees.
Sichlau scored his second goal of the day on an assist from Gardner with 2:32 left. Gardner took the ball from behind the net around to the right side and found Sichlau out in front as he cut the Bantams' lead to 12-10. Trinity scored its last goal with 1:01 left for the final margin.
Max Scheidl '21 recorded a season-high 21 saves for the Continentals and
Quin Crowley '22 won nine faceoffs and picked up a team-high seven ground balls.
Kyle Mannherz '24 led the defense with five ground balls and two caused turnovers.
