Hamilton College's
Ethan Harrast '23 and
David Galvao '23 led the Continentals to victory in the opener and Hamilton split a NESCAC West Division doubleheader with the Amherst College Mammoths at the Continentals' Loop Road Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon.
Hamilton (3-5, 3-5 NESCAC West) scored five runs in the third inning and went on to win Game 1 by a 7-4 score. Amherst rebounded with a 3-1 triumph in the nightcap as two Mammoths pitchers combined on a no-hitter. The two teams play the third and final game of the weekend series on Sunday, April 18 in Amherst, Mass. The time of the first pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
Game 1
Harrast boasted three hits, including his first collegiate home run, and picked up the save as the Continentals rallied from down 3-1. Harrast also singled and smacked one of Hamilton's three triples.
Matt McGoey '21 and
Shane Dux '24 had the other triples.
Brady Slinger '22 singled twice and stole a base, and
Jackson Sattinger '24 went 2-for-2 with a walk. Slinger leads the team with a .417 batting average and has a .533 on-base percentage.
Galvao pitched three hitless innings in relief and picked up his first win for the Continentals. He's allowed just six base runners in 11 innings this season. Harrast relieved Galvao and tossed a perfect seventh inning for his first save.
Amherst (3-2, 3-2) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and was robbed of an extra-base hit with two outs in the second when center fielder
Jay Schlaefer '23 sprinted towards the wall and made an outstanding diving catch.
Hamilton tied the score in the bottom of the inning after
Jacob Han '21 led off by reaching on a throwing error by the shortstop. Han eventually scored on a single to center by Sattinger. The Mammoths came right back with two runs in the top of the third.
The Continentals grabbed a 6-3 advantage with five runs on six hits in the bottom of the inning.
Phil Bernstein '23 led off with a single up the middle and went to second on a failed pickoff attempt. Harrast followed with a blast that hit the scoreboard in left. Slinger laid down a perfect bunt down the third base line for a hit and scored on a triple to left center by McGoey. Han plated McGoey with a sacrifice fly to left. Dux rounded out the inning after he hammered a two-out triple to right center and scored on Sattinger's single up the middle.
Amherst scored a run on three hits in the top of the fourth but Hamilton immediately got its three-run lead back. Bernstein led off with a walk and scored after consecutive singles to right field by Harrast and Slinger. The Mammoths didn't get another hit off Galvao or Harrast over the final three innings.
Game 2
Nick Giattino and Alan Dai combined on a no-hitter for Amherst. Giattino allowed one run on seven walks and struck out seven while Dai fanned the one batter he faced with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Mammoths scored all three runs in the fourth inning on four hits and a walk.
Sattinger struck out six in three scoreless innings of relief for the Continentals.
Gavin Schaefer-Hood '22 started on the mound and allowed three runs on five hits and two walks in four innings. Schaefer-Hood also fanned three.
Hamilton scored its run with two outs in the seventh. Han, Schaefer-Hood, Sattinger and Dux all walked, but the tying run was left on second base after the next batter struck out. The Continentals' only other threat came in the bottom of the first when Slinger and McGoey walked with two outs. Slinger drew two of the seven free passes.
