Baseball grabs NESCAC West Division split at Wesleyan

Schaefer-Hood '22 pitches Continentals to victory in the opener

Hamilton College's Gavin Schaefer-Hood '22 moved into a tie for third place on the program's all-time list for career pitching victories and the Continentals split a NESCAC West Division doubleheader with the Wesleyan University Cardinals at Wesleyan's Dresser Diamond on Saturday.

Hamilton (1-4, 1-4 NESCAC) won the opener 8-5 and the Cardinals edged the Continentals 4-3 in the second game. Both contests lasted seven innings.

The two teams will play a single, nine-inning game at Hamilton's Loop Road Athletic Complex on Sunday, April 11 at 3 p.m.

Game 1

Wesleyan (2-3, 2-3) scored two runs in its first at-bat before the Continentals took control by recording the next eight. The Cardinals tried to rally late with two runs in the sixth and another in the seventh. Wesleyan had the tying run at the plate with one out in the seventh, but reliever David Galvao '23 came in and struck out the next two batters for his first collegiate save.

Schaefer-Hood collected his 13th career win after he allowed two first-inning runs on six hits in five innings. He struck out six, hit two batters and didn't walk anyone.

Brady Slinger '22 and Ethan Harrast '23 singled and tripled, and Slinger drove in a pair of runs. Shane Dux '24 also plated two runs.

Hamilton tied the score in the top of the second inning. Matt McGoey '21 led off with a single through the left side and scored on Slinger's one-out triple to right-center field. Slinger tied the score on a balk by Cardinals starting pitcher Pat Clare.

The Continentals took the lead for good in the third after Harrast tripled to right center and scored on a single to center field by Jacob Han '21.

Hamilton blew things open with five runs on four hits in the top of the fifth. Dux's two-run single between the first and second basemen and Slinger's RBI single through the right side were the highlights. The Continentals also scored runs on a double steal and a wild pitch.

Game 2

Wesleyan took the early lead with two runs in both the first and third innings and then held on late. Hamilton responded with a run in the fourth and two more in the sixth. In the seventh Slinger doubled down the left field line with two outs and Schaefer-Hood drew a walk. Both runners moved up on a stolen base and gave the Continentals two men in scoring position, but the next batter struck out to end the game.

Ed Connolly '23, Jack Clougherty '23 and Ryan Krill '24 combined to throw 3.1 scoreless innings of relief for Hamilton. The Continentals coaxed nine walks out of Cardinals pitching, including three by Schaefer-Hood. Designated hitter Kyle Sylvester led Wesleyan's offense with two hits and two runs batted in.

Hamilton scored its first run in the top of the fourth when the Cardinals walked the bases loaded and Charlie O'Brien '24 scampered home on a wild pitch. O'Brien had entered as a pinch-runner for McGoey, who led off the inning with a walk.

The Continentals scored two more runs in the sixth without the benefit of a hit. Hamilton loaded the bases again on three walks and Phil Bernstein '23 made it 4-2 when he reached first and forced in a run on an infield error. With the bases still loaded, Harrast hit a ground ball to shortstop that turned into a forceout at second and plated Schaefer-Hood. Hamilton had runners at the corners and trailed by just a run with two outs, but the next batter fouled out to the first baseman.
