Women's basketball gets off to fast start in win over Wellesley

Mercado Rengel '24 enjoys big night at Norwich's Ed Hockenbury Classic

The Hamilton College Continentals put forth a true team effort in their 66-40 win over The Wellesley College Blue in Norwich University's 2021 Ed Hockenbury Classic at Andrews Hall on Friday night.

Hamilton moved to 4-3 on the season with its second win in as many nights. The Continentals aim to continue their win streak against Colby-Sawyer College on Saturday, Dec. 4 at 1 p.m. on the final day of the Ed Hockenbury Classic.

Maria Mercado Rengel '24 led the way with a season-high 19 points and added six rebounds. Rengel was extremely efficient from the field as she was 7 of 8 from the floor including 4 of 5 from 3-point range. Claire Sehring '22 contributed 10 points and eight boards, and Kelcie Zarle '22 pitched in eight points. Ten Hamilton players got in the scoring column and helped the Continentals put this game away early on.

Hamilton jumped out to a 7-0 lead and never looked back. The Continentals began to pull away in the second quarter after Wellesley closed to within one at 16-15 with 8:50 left. Hamilton went on a 16-4 run the rest of the quarter and took a 34-19 advantage into the break. The Continentals continued to pour it on after halftime and outscored the Blue 20-6. A layup by Olivia Davis '23 gave Hamilton a 31-point lead -- its largest of the night -- at 54-23 with 28 seconds remaining.

The Continentals were solid on defense as they came up with 13 steals and limited Wellesley to 29.4 percent shooting from the floor. Emily Hall '24 led the defensive effort with five steals and added three assists. The 40 points scored by the Blue are the fewest Hamilton had allowed since Nov. 19, 2019.

Anna Greenthal paced Wellesley (1-7 overall) with 13 points and three assists and added three steals. Greenthal made all eight of her free throw attempts and was the only Blue player who went to the line. Taylor Hirn chipped in eight points, six rebounds and four steals. Wellesley is a member of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference.

The Continentals enjoyed a 41-25 advantage on the glass and scored 30 points in the paint. Hamilton also owned a 17-6 edge in second-chance points.
