Women's basketball rolls past Colby-Sawyer in Norwich tournament

Zarle '22 and Sehring '23 named to the all-classic team as Continentals win third straight

The Hamilton College Continentals ended Norwich University's 2021 Ed Hockenbury Classic on a high note with an 81-38 win over the Colby-Sawyer College Chargers at Andrews Hall on Saturday afternoon.

Hamilton extended its win streak to three games and improved to 5-3 on the season. The Continentals went 2-0 in the Classic with a 66-40 victory over Wellesley College on Friday night.

Kelcie Zarle '22 and Emma Sehring '23 earned spots on the all-classic team with their strong play in the two games. Zarle averaged 12.5 points and 2.0 steals and Sehring averaged 10 points and 6.5 rebounds.

Colby-Sawyer, a member of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, remained winless at 0-7. The Chargers made eight 3-pointers but was 0 of 18 on two-point field goal attempts.

Zarle led the way for the Continentals with 17 points and added three steals. Sehring poured in 14 points, grabbed nine rebounds and handed out three assists. Emily Hall '24 scored 12 and Sophie Thompson '24 added 10 off the bench. The Continentals shot the ball well the whole game at an efficient 51.4 percent from the floor. Hall was a perfect 4-for-4 at the free-throw line.

The Continentals scored the first 19 points before Gabby Lucertini hit a 3-point shot that got the Chargers on the board with 2:41 left in the first quarter. The Continentals enjoyed a 24-4 cushion after one quarter, and Hamilton led by double digits the rest of the way. Colby-Sawyer's Emily Parent hit a free throw with 2:02 left in the second quarter to cut its deficit to 16 points at 33-17, but that was as close as the Chargers would get during the last three quarters. The Continentals led 42-19 at the break and 62-31 after three.

Hamilton's defensive efforts against Wellesley carried over to its game against Colby-Sawyer. The Continentals allowed a season-low 38 points after only allowing 40 points to Wellesley. Hamilton held the Chargers to 16 percent shooting from the floor and helped cause 24 turnovers by swiping 15 steals. Abigael Morin '25 led the Continentals with four steals. Hamilton outrebounded Colby-Sawyer 50-22.

Emily Parent paced Colby-Sawyer with 21 points and was 5 of 11 from beyond the arc. No other Charger scored more than four points. Marissa Holt pulled down six boards and Lia Raynowska blocked three shots.

Hamilton has more than three weeks off before the Continentals host a non-conference contest against William Smith College on Thursday, Dec. 30.
