Men's basketball heads into the winter break on a high note

Continentals pull away in the second half for an 84-61 win over Purchase

Led by Hank Morgan '25, the Hamilton College Continentals defeated the Purchase College Panthers 84-61 at Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Saturday afternoon.

The Continentals moved to 5-4 on the season with their fourth win by more than 20 points. Hamilton has more than two weeks off before the Continentals play against Dickinson College in the 2021 Stevens Holiday Tournament on Wednesday, Dec. 29 in Hoboken, N.J.

Hamilton put 13 players in the scoring column as the Continentals racked up 46 bench points. Morgan came off the bench and scored a season-high 14 points. Liam Regan '23 also was a key contributor off the bench with 11 points. Elliott Tirbaso '22 chipped in 12 points, Patrick Mogan '23 grabbed 10 rebounds, and Conner Rood '23 and Teja Singh '25 handed out five assists apiece. Rood made his first appearance in three weeks after he was injured on Nov. 20.

Purchase was paced by Malcolm Hansford-Whyte, as he led the Panthers with 22 points, five rebounds and four assists. James Brady was credited with four steals and two blocked shots. The Panthers remain winless at 0-6.

The Continentals got out to a fast start, jumping out to a 10-2 lead in the first two minutes. Purchase climbed back to within two points at 17-15 with 11:59 left, but Hamilton responded with a 13-0 run for its largest lead of the first half at 15 points with 8:09 remaining. Mogan scored six points during the spurt. The Panthers eventually closed to within five points at 42-37 at the half. The Continentals shot 54.8 percent from the floor in the first half.

Purchase cut Hamilton's lead down to one point at 42-41 in the first minute of the second half. Regan eventually sparked a 13-1 Hamilton run that was capped by a Graham Robinson '25 3-point shot. Robinson's basket pushed the lead to 55-42 with 14:37 to go. The Continentals never looked back after this run as they led by double digits the rest of the way. Rood found Tirbaso for a 3-pointer and a 20-point lead at 67-47 with 10:00 left. Max Freishtat '25 canned back-to-back 3-pointers and gave Hamilton its largest lead of 31 points at 83-52 with 3:53 remaining.

Hamilton overcame their early free-throw shooting woes (4-for-8 in the first half) by using their size advantage and 3-point shooting to carry them to the win. The Continentals outrebounded the Panthers 44-29, and shot 50.8 percent including 11 of 22 from beyond the arc.
