Men's basketball edged by four points, Tirbaso '22 ties career high

Four Continentals score in double figures in tough loss at undefeated Nichols

Nichols College ended the game with a 5-0 run in the last 2:11 of the second half and the Bison pulled out an 80-76 non-conference win against the Hamilton College Continentals at the Nichols Athletics Center on Tuesday evening.

Hamilton has had some tough luck on the road early this season as the Continentals' overall record dipped to 1-3. The three teams Hamilton has lost to thus far have a combined record of 15-1. The Continentals committed just nine turnovers but shot 37.8 percent from the field.

The Bison -- members of the Commonwealth Coast Conference -- remained undefeated at 5-0. Nichols was 11 of 23 from 3-point range and owned a 20-6 advantage in bench points.

Hamilton's Elliott Tirbaso '22 tied a career high for the second time this season with 17 points. Eric Anderson '22 dropped in 16 points and 6-foot, 8-inch Patrick Mogan '23 stuffed the stat sheet with 16 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals. Nick Osarenren '22 posted his second double-double in three games with 14 points and 13 boards and added four steals.

Jakigh Dottin helped lead the Bison with 17 points and three assists, and Matthew Alectus contributed 17 off the bench. Tahmeen Dupree scored 16 points and Jaekwon Spencer had 11. Matt Morrow grabbed 11 rebounds and handed out three assists.

Alectus' layup put Nichols in the lead for good at 77-76 with 2:11 left. The score remained that way for nearly the next two minutes as the Continentals missed three field goal attempts and the Bison turned the ball over twice. Dottin finally made 1 of 2 free throws with 23 seconds remaining for a 78-76 edge.

Hamilton had one last chance to tie or take the lead but Osarenren's shot in the paint bounced off the rim and was grabbed by Morrow. Dottin clinched the victory with two more free throws with 4.3 seconds to go.

The Continentals trailed 46-41 at the break and Nichols eventually went up by 13 at 58-45 with 15:47 left. Hamilton stormed back and pulled within one at 66-65 on an Osarenren layup with 9:00 remaining. The Bison scored the next five points but the Continentals came back again and finally took the lead at 76-75 with 2:35 to go when Liam Regan '23 found Mogan for a 3-pointer.

Neither team led by more four points during the first 10 minutes of the first half. Nichols created some separation with a 7-0 run for a 29-22 lead with 8:48 left, and the Bison eventually built a nine-point lead twice late in the half at 39-30 and 46-37.
