Baldwin Wallace University's Anthony Mazzeo poured in 44 points and handed out five assists as the Yellow Jackets prevailed 94-87 in overtime against the Hamilton College Continentals at Baldwin Wallace's Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea, Ohio, on Saturday afternoon.
Hamilton (1-1 overall) held a 45-40 edge in rebounds but committed 25 turnovers and went 18-for-30 at the free-throw line. The Continentals were 7 of 18 from 3-point range after making 24 shots from long range in their season opener against Elmira College on Nov. 16. Hamilton continues its Ohio weekend road trip at Case Western Reserve University on Sunday, Nov. 21 at 3 p.m.
The Yellow Jackets remained undefeated at 3-0 by shooting 50 percent from the floor in the second half. Baldwin Wallace finished 10 of 22 from beyond the arc.
Nick Osarenren '22 posted his first double-double for the Continentals with a career-high 26 points and added 11 rebounds and three blocked shots before he fouled out with 50 seconds left in overtime.
Eric Anderson '22 also recorded his first double-double for Hamilton with 18 points and 10 boards. Anderson chipped in four assists and four of the Continentals' 13 steals.
Conner Rood '23 dropped in a career-best 19 points and
Patrick Mogan '23 registered a career-high 11 boards and dished out four assists.
Mazzeo was 15 of 28 from the field including 6 of 10 from 3-point range and 8-for-9 at the line. He was also credited with eight of the Yellow Jackets' 20 turnovers. Christian Pfeiffer recorded a double-double with 18 points and 16 rebounds and blocked three shots. Shane Zalba added five assists and three steals.
Rood scored 12 points in the first half and led Hamilton to a 40-34 lead at the break. The six-point advantage was the largest of the half for either team. Baldwin Wallace rallied and took a pair of six-point leads midway through the second half. The Continentals moved in front 79-77 on a 3-pointer by Anderson with 52 seconds left in regulation, but Mazzeo drew the Yellow Jackets even on a layup with 38 seconds remaining. Both teams had a chance to break the tie but they went to the extra period deadlocked at 79-79.
In overtime a 3-pointer by Jake Snyder put Baldwin Wallace in front for good at 84-82 with 3:17 to go. The Yellow Jackets kept Hamilton at bay by making all eight of their free-throw attempts in the final 50 seconds.
