Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Jim Taylor

Men's basketball scores 113 points in season-opening victory

Continentals put a half-dozen players in double figures in points

Hamilton College made 24 shots from 3-point range and the Continentals breezed to a 113-78 non-conference win against the Elmira College Soaring Eagles at Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Tuesday night.

The Continentals were playing their first game since February 2020 after the pandemic canceled the 2020-21 season. Hamilton shot 44.4 percent from beyond the arc, grabbed 24 offensive rebounds, had 30 assists on 41 baskets and made 13 steals on 20 Elmira turnovers. The 113 points are the most in a game since Dec. 28, 2018 when the Continentals scored 114 against Ursinus College.

Elmira is still searching for its first win after three games. The Soaring Eagles went 21-for-28 at the free-throw line, and in the second half they were 7 of 13 from long range.

Nick Osarenren '22 led Hamilton with a career-high 19 points, hauled in seven rebounds, blocked three shots and made three steals. Elliott Tirbaso '22 tied career bests with 17 points and seven rebounds, and Eric Anderson '22 chipped in 17 points and four steals. Conner Rood '23 recorded his first double-double with a career-high 15 points and 10 assists. Teja Singh '25 and Hank Morgan '25 led a strong performance by the bench with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Osarenren and Anderson drained five 3-pointers apiece and Singh nailed four more.

Elmira's Bryan Adams led all players with 23 points and Rashaad Nurse contributed 15. David Kruis made four 3-pointers off the bench and finished with 16 points. Quintel Clements pulled down a game-high nine boards.

The Continentals opened with a 7-0 run and led the entire game. Tirbaso gave Hamilton it's first double-digit lead at 15-4 on a 3-pointer from the left wing with 14:29 left, and Anderson put the Continentals up by 20 for the first time on a 3-pointer from the left corner that made it 36-15 with 4:45 remaining.

The Soaring Eagles scored the last six points of the half and trailed 47-28 going into the locker room. Elmira shot 35.3 percent from the field including 0 of 6 from 3-point range in the first half.

It took Hamilton less than three minutes to go up by 30 for the first time as Rood's pull-up jumper from just inside the free-throw line made it 61-31 with 17:28 to go. The Continentals took their largest lead of 40 points at 110-70 with 4:21 left on Morgan's steal and layup.

Hamilton travels to Ohio to take on Baldwin Wallace University on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 2 p.m. The Yellow Jackets are 2-0 and averaging 88 points per game.
