Hopewell '25 boasts first 100-yard day in football loss at Bates

Eltayeb '24 returns opening kickoff for touchdown but Continentals drop season finale

Bates College's Colton Bosselait threw four touchdown passes, including the game-winning score with four seconds left, and helped rally the Bobcats to a 27-21 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Bates' Garcelon Field on a sunny and mild Saturday afternoon in mid-November.

Hamilton lost its sixth straight game and finished the season with a 2-7 record. The Continentals, who led 21-13 at the half, gained 357 yards, intercepted three passes and blocked three kicks.

The Bobcats racked up 27 first downs and 527 yards and were 7 of 13 on third down conversions. Bates finished with a 3-6 record.

Hamilton's Kamau Hopewell '25 ran for a season-high 103 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. Matt Banbury '23 was 18 of 26 passing for 218 yards and ran for a touchdown. Drew Granski '22 recorded 99 yards receiving on a career-best seven catches.

George Johnson '23 led the Continentals defense with 11 tackles. Mike Cairns '22 chipped in nine stops, his first collegiate sack and an interception return for 18 yards. The pick was Cairns' third at Hamilton. Alex Hanna '24 was credited with seven solo tackles and registered his first interception. Christian Snell '23 grabbed his sixth career interception.

Bosselait ended up 23 of 36 for 372 yards, Caleb Bolden rushed for 88 yards and Sean Bryant contributed seven catches for 127 yards. Spencer Adams led the team with nine tackles and Anthony Costa added seven stops and an interception.

Hamilton blocked a 37-yard field goal attempt by the Bobcats with 1:53 left in the fourth quarter but went three-and-out and gave the ball back to Bates with 39 seconds remaining. The Bobcats immediately took a holding penalty and had first-and-10 at their own 28. After an 11-yard completion and a 13-yard scramble for Bosselait, Christian Olivieri caught a 48-yard pass for the touchdown that broke a 21-21 tie with four seconds to go.

The Continentals got off to a great start when Saleh Eltayeb '24 returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for his second touchdown this season. Bates responded with a 10-play, 70-yard scoring drive that ended with an eight-yard toss from Bosselait to Bryant with 10:26 left in the first quarter. The score remained tied at 7-7 until Bosselait found Derek Marino for a three-yard touchdown pass with 10:59 remaining in the second quarter. The drive was kept alive by a 23-yard catch by Bolden on a screen pass to the Hamilton 40 on third-and-16.

Hamilton recaptured the lead on its next drive that was capped by Hopewell's 43-yard touchdown scamper -- his third on the ground and fifth overall this season -- with 7:19 to go. Quinn Voboril '22 added the extra point for the 14-13 edge. The Continentals forced a three-and-out by the Bobcats and then embarked on a 16-play, 84-yard march that ended with a two-yard touchdown plunge by Banbury on fourth down with 11 seconds left. Hamilton took a 21-13 lead into the locker room.

Bates' opening drive of the second half was stymied by Hanna's interception in the end zone. The Bobcats eventually drew even with 6:45 remaining in the third quarter on a nine-yard touchdown catch by Alexander Suny and a two-point conversion pass from Bosselait to Jackson Hayes.

The Continentals missed a great chance to move back in front early in the fourth quarter but lost a fumble at the Bates six-yard line on fourth-and one. Hamilton's defense held and forced a punt, but Costa intercepted Banbury on the next play at the Bobcats 34.
