Hamilton College scored twice in the second half against the Bowdoin College Polar Bears and the Continentals secured their first NESCAC win of the season with a 2-0 decision on Saturday afternoon at Hamilton's Love Field.
The Continentals (4-6-1 overall, 1-6-0 NESCAC) out-shot the Polar Bears 15-10, but Bowdoin had a 7-2 advantage on corner kicks.
Ben Ziegler '24 recorded one save and combined with
Thomas Benson '22 on Hamilton's second shutout this fall. Benson played almost 10 minutes in his first action in net this season. Bowdoin's Chris Kingston made five stops.
The first half was a defensive battle with neither team allowing a goal and both keeping the shots on goal count low. Bowdoin (6-4-0, 3-4) recorded two shots on net with both resulting in a team save, and Hamilton only had one shot on net.
The Continentals' first goal came in the 56
th minute when
Sam Webber '23 dribbled the ball down the right side, beat his defender and fed the ball from the top corner of the 18-yard box towards the left post where
Sam Dils '22 was wide open. Dils headed the ball off the inside of the post and into the top-left corner.
Hamilton's second goal came in the 75
th minute.
Pandelis Margaronis '25 lofted a pass from 40 yards out through four defenders to
Charles Hawthorn '25 who tapped it over the goalkeeper from just inside the 18-yard box. Hawthorne then watched the ball bounce into the back of the net.
Bowdoin's best chance was off a corner kick in the 49
th minute. The ball landed in a scrum in front of the net but Ziegler made the save and kept the shutout.
Hamilton hosts SUNY Poly on Wednesday, Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. for a non-conference match under the lights on Withiam Field.
